    Syrah Sicilia DOC
  • The first thing that strikes you when you look at the label of this wine (and all the others) from Cantine Patrì is its obvious 'Sicilian-ness'. A sunny landscape with prickly pears in the foreground and the blue Mediterranean Sea in the background. The basis, in this case, is a grape variety that, although classically understood as international, is undeniably linked to Sicily, with excellent qualitative results. On the island, Syrah is capable of expressing intense and structured wines, elegant and complex, which blend the fresh scents of native fruits with the innate spicy sensations. Just like this Sicilia DOC red wine. The grapes in this case come from the central southern area of the island, in the municipality of Butera in Contrada Punturo. Syrah in purity, the average age of the plants is around 15 years. Harvested by hand in the morning, the grapes arrive early in the cellar to begin their transformation process. Fermentation on the skins for 20 days at a controlled temperature, during this phase they work to allow the complete extraction of colour and tannins. Then, after racking, the wine is put into second and third passage barrels and barriques for about 6 months before being bottled. In the glass, this fine Syrah has a ruby red colour, with slight purple notes. The nose is elegant, complex and typical, with delicately spicy notes reminiscent of black pepper and cocoa. On the palate, it is warm and soft with docile tannins and a great minerality that gives it pleasant length. Magnificent with grilled meats. Simply to try.

Cantine Patrì has roots as solid as its vineyards. The company was founded in 1936, in the territory of Butera, by Rocco Paterna, who was succeeded, years later, by his son-in-law Giuseppe Patrì and later by his son Rocco. The latter, with his wife Patrizia and children Giuseppe, Elisa and Daniela, decided to enhance the extraordinary wine heritage of his land, devoting a third of the 250 hectares of property to the production of wine. Today Cantine Patrì produces wines in the Riesi, Etna and Sicily DOCGs, as well as the prestigious Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG. The winery is located in the hilly inland area of the province of Caltanissetta, in central southern Sicily, characterised by mild temperatures, abundant sunshine and a period of drought generally concentrated between June and August. Soils composed of clayey and calcareous rocks allow the winery to produce wines of great structure, with compact, deep colours and great longevity. The varieties represented are those typical of the region, namely Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Syrah, Catarratto, Insolia, Grillo and Zibibbo. The company is also committed to environmental protection and the safeguarding of specific characteristics. The entire production of Cantine Patrì, therefore, is part of a harmonious project that starts from the meticulous care of the processes, to the choice of the best grapes up to the cellar, where a meticulous control of all phases begins, through modern and respectful processes of vinification.
