Today we find ourselves on the hill of Corton, where the vineyards draw a perfect natural amphitheatre and the soil smells of iron and history. Here, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, lies the village of Aloxe-Corton, a place that seems to have stood still in time and that produces some of the noblest and most structured red wines in all Burgundy. A fine example is this Aloxe-Corton by Olivier Leflaive. The soils are a mosaic of limestone marl and iron-rich clays, a combination that gives the wines remarkable power and longevity. Air currents descending from the surrounding hills ensure constant freshness, allowing the grapes to maintain a perfect balance between sugar ripeness and acidic tension. Pure Pinot Noir, the grape here expresses itself with darker and earthier tones compared to the delicacy of neighbouring villages. The grapes are 100% destemmed to avoid overly pronounced bitter notes, followed by alcoholic fermentation in open vats lasting 15 days. The wine then undergoes a long ageing period of 16 months: the first 12 months entirely in oak barrels, while the final 4 months are spent in stainless steel tanks to stabilise the fruit before bottling. Deep ruby red, almost austere, on the nose it immediately impresses with a subtle hint of oak that does not mask but rather enhances the complexity of the bouquet: forest berries, ripe cherry and hints of undergrowth blend with lightly spicy notes. On the palate it is a wine with character. The tannins are present and well defined, highlighting a solid structure that caresses the palate without ever feeling heavy. The finish is persistent and recalls the mineral character of the soil. Its ageing potential is excellent. Its tannic structure and aromatic complexity allow it to evolve gracefully over the next 10–12 years, transforming the vibrancy of the fruit into tertiary notes of leather and tobacco. In short, this is a bottle to forget in the cellar for a few years if you want to enjoy it at its fullest expression.
Maison Olivier Leflaive is located in Puligny-Montrachet, one of the most prestigious villages of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This maison is not just a winery, but a reference point for anyone seeking the expressive purity of Chardonnay and the finesse of Pinot Noir. The history of the Leflaive family in Burgundy dates back to the 18th century, but it was in 1984 that Olivier decided to pursue his own path. After co-managing the legendary Domaine Leflaive together with his uncle Vincent and his cousin Anne-Claude, a pioneer of biodynamics, Olivier chose to establish his own activity as a négociant-éleveur. Unlike traditional merchants who purchase already finished wine, Olivier revolutionised the system by buying the grapes while still on the vine. This allows him to send his own teams to harvest and to control every stage, from the vineyard to the bottle, ensuring a style that has become his trademark: precision, balance and absolute fidelity to the terroir. The strength of Olivier Leflaive lies in his extraordinary knowledge of the Côte d'Or. The company manages around 120 hectares of vineyards (17 of which are owned), spanning names that make every wine lover dream: Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and the legendary Grand Crus such as Bâtard-Montrachet.
