The 2017 Tenuta Frescobaldi Castiglioni is an all-Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese with fruit from Frescobaldi's clay soil on the Castiglioni estate in the Val di Pesa. The wine embraces its generous Toscanità, thanks to that warm-vintage succulence, richness and fruit-forward ripeness. You can't really make out any of the individual traits of the varieties used here, but that's hardly the point. You get good structure from the two Cabernets and lots of soft richness from the Merlot. The Sangiovese is a bit lost, but that grape weighs in with a touch of freshness. The wine is robust for sure, but there is no heavy jamminess in the fruit. This is a fun and informal Tuscan blend to drink in the near and medium term.

The Castiglioni Estate stands on the rolling hills of Val di Pesa; here the richness of time and soil is expressed in the structure of the wines, thanks to the symbiosis of fresh soil, mild climate and the afternoon breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Tenuta Frescobaldi Castiglioni has a beautiful intense and deep ruby red colour with purple highlights. Its bouquet is wonderfully complex. The fruity incipit, with notes reminiscent of blackberry and black cherry, gives way to elegant vanilla notes with light nuances of tobacco and white pepper. It is warm, soft and round on the palate, with intense fruity notes that return and a finish, delicately spicy, fresh and elegant. The tannic texture is thin and dense.
A family property since the eleventh century, Castiglioni is the centre of origin of Frescobaldi wine production, which has borne witness to their exploits since 1300. The estate stretches along the ancient Via di Castiglioni, built by the Romans to connect northern Tuscany with Rome, the eternal city. The area was already famous in those days for the high quality of its agricultural crops and was for centuries at the centre of intense traffic and the place chosen for the construction of luxurious Roman villas. The noble coat of arms of the Frescobaldi family, with the crown, the shield and the three rocks, is also the symbol of Castiglioni, to recall the 700 years of winemaking history, which began on this very estate.
