A big, rich red with blackberry, chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It’s full and layered. Just a baby. Reflects the ripeness of the vintage, yet shows energy. Better after 222.
Lamberto Frescobaldi writes, ‘Walking among the rows of Cabernet and Petit Verdot, my thoughts always go back 150 years, when my ancestors first planted these varieties with the desire to produce a great wine.’ We can now say with absolute certainty that this goal has been achieved in this bottle. Since 1983, the Mormoreto Cru has been producing a wine with a vibrant, deep and harmonious character. And since 2013, a small amount of Sangiovese has further emphasised its elegance. The Mormoreto vineyard is located at an altitude of about 300 metres above sea level, on sandy soils with a south-west exposure. The 2022 vintage began with good soil water reserves due to a previously average autumn rainfall. The winter was mild and fairly long, ending with a sunny March, which broke the dormancy of the first vines. Sporadic spring rains among the rows of vines in Nipozzano gave way to a dry and very hot summer, but characterised by the typical cooling winds of the area. The rains at the end of August and September allowed both the earlier and later grape varieties to complete their ripening cycle with an excellent and balanced concentration of fruit. The temperature range promoted the accumulation of noble, easily extractable phenolic substances and complex aromas, concluding a rich and very sunny year. The 2022 harvest yielded wonderfully ripe grapes with a splendid acidity. Malolactic fermentation took place immediately after racking. At the end of the year, Mormoreto began its ageing process in French oak barriques, where it remained for the next 18 months, benefiting greatly from the natural micro-oxygenation provided by the oak. After bottling, the following months of ageing allowed Mormoreto to harmonise, expressing its elegance and potential to the fullest.
