Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute sarl Via di Nozzole 12 Greve in Chianti (FI)
Tuscan red wine is almost always synonymous with Sangiovese. This grape variety, typical of central Italy, is all power and rusticity, which must be tamed with a firm hand in the countryside and wooden barrels in the cellar. But there is a small corner of Tuscany that refuses to bow to the dominance of Sangiovese, preferring the elegance of the most classic of international blends to the rustic Italian flavour. The so-called “Bordeaux blend”, which is created by adding a little Cabernet Sauvignon (or vice versa) to Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot. It is from this magical mix of grape varieties that Campo al Mare, Bolgheri DOC, produced by Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari, is born. An elegant wine, aged in French oak barriques to achieve greater complexity. On the nose, hints of red berries, liquorice and vanilla. Pleasantly tannic on the palate with a long finish.
The Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari estates are one of the most interesting wineries in Tuscany, with roots dating back to the 18th century. The Folonari family began their wine-making business in the late 1700s, when Lorenzo Folonari, originally from Valtellina, started an entrepreneurial tradition that would profoundly mark the history of Italian wine. In 2000, Ambrogio and his son Giovanni Folonari founded the Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute winery with the aim of enhancing the family's properties and producing high-quality wines. Today, the winery comprises five estates located in some of Tuscany's most renowned areas. Tenuta di Nozzole, located in the heart of Chianti Classico, Le Tenute del Cabreo, in Greve in Chianti, where Supertuscans such as Cabreo Il Borgo and La Pietra are produced. Then there is Tenuta La Fuga, in Montalcino, Campo al Mare in Bolgheri and Vigne in Porrona in the Tuscan Maremma. The Folonari family has always focused on innovation and quality. In recent years, the company has invested over €9 million in the construction of a new winery at Tenute del Cabreo, designed by architect Carlo Ludovico Poccianti.
