Le Mortelle's Botrosecco, produced by Antinori, is tangible proof that the Maremma can compete in elegance with the great international reds, adding a touch of Tuscan soul. The Le Mortelle estate is a corner of paradise overlooking the sea, a few kilometres from the splendid Castiglione della Pescaia. The Antinori family, always one step ahead, purchased the estate in 1999, recognising the enormous potential of a territory where sea winds collide with hills that offer perfect temperature variations. The Maremma Toscana appellation is relatively recent but extremely dynamic and authoritative. It is not exclusively linked to native grape varieties such as Sangiovese, but also beautifully enhances international varieties. This wine, for example, is a classic but skilfully orchestrated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (about 60%) and Cabernet Franc (about 40%). The grapes, harvested by hand with great care to ensure maximum integrity, ferment in stainless steel tanks for about 15 days. This temperature-controlled choice aims to enhance the varietal aromatic component, keeping the fruit notes clean and crisp. After malolactic fermentation, also completed in steel, the wine matures for a period of about 9-12 months in French oak barriques. This ageing is essential to soften and refine the dense tannic texture, without ever weighing down the drink. Intense, lively and brilliant ruby red, when you bring the glass close to your nose, you immediately perceive a rich and complex bouquet dominated by aromas of ripe red berries and a pleasant blackberry jam. These are complemented by balsamic notes of eucalyptus and Mediterranean herbs, beautifully harmonised with sweet spices, white pepper and a final hint of tobacco and cocoa. On the palate, this red wine is enveloping and flavourful. You immediately notice a pleasant savouriness and freshness that balances the power of the fruit. The tannins are soft, sweet and well-crafted, filling the mouth without any roughness. The finish is persistent and leaves a long and pleasant aftertaste of bitter cocoa and fresh fruit.
The Tuscan Maremma, a land where the Mediterranean scrub perfumes the air, the hills merge with the horizon and the sea is so close you can feel its breeze. This is where Le Mortelle is located, the estate that the historic Antinori family chose to write a new and fascinating chapter in its centuries-old winemaking history. Purchased in 1999, the estate is located a few kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia, in an area that Antinori was able to read with foresight, believing in its great potential. The vineyards of Le Mortelle, which cover approximately 170 hectares, are planted on medium-textured soils, rich in clay and silica, with stones that promote good drainage. This soil composition, combined with the proximity of the sea, creates ideal conditions for quality viticulture. It is no coincidence that international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, together with white varieties typical of the coast such as Vermentino and Ansonica, find their maximum expression here. The true soul of Le Mortelle, however, lies in its production philosophy, which combines respect for the land with cutting-edge technology. The winery itself is a masterpiece of architecture and sustainability. It was built almost entirely underground, using natural rock to ensure constant temperature and humidity, with considerable energy savings. But there is more. The entire wine-making process, from the arrival of the grapes to the filling of the tanks, takes place by gravity on three levels. This less traumatic process preserves the aromas and varietal scents to the maximum. Le Mortelle is not just a beautiful winery. It is rather a statement of intent: to produce wines that are the maximum expression of the Maremma terroir, with a constant eye on nature and innovation.
