Syrah is not a guest in Tuscany. It is now a certainty. A winning bet, especially in the Cortona area. We are in a corner of Tuscany overlooking the Val di Chiana, an area historically more linked to Sangiovese but which in recent decades has revealed an extraordinary vocation for Syrah. Cortona, with its sun-kissed hills and clay-rich, skeletal soils, offers almost unique conditions: a continental climate that guarantees significant temperature variations between day and night. This dynamic is crucial because it allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing both power and more delicate aromas. The Antinori family's La Braccesca estate has believed in this potential since the 1990s, contributing decisively to defining the identity of Cortona DOC Syrah. Bramasole is a pure and intense expression of this union between Tuscany and Syrah. The grapes are harvested from the most suitable plots, those that, as the name suggests, “yearn for the sun”. The production method is geared towards extracting the best of both the aroma and the softness of the tannins. After destemming and soft pressing, the must ferments in steel, with maceration on the skins for about fifteen days. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and a long ageing process in French oak barriques for about 12-18 months. Intense ruby red in colour, the nose is a whirlwind of sensations. It starts with a burst of ripe black fruits, such as blackberry and plum, then opens up to more complex and unmistakable notes of black pepper, liquorice and a touch of balsamic. The palate is rich and enveloping. A wine of great structure, perfectly balanced by velvety tannins and a freshness that makes it dynamic. The long, spicy finish is a clear invitation to take another sip: a rich, full-bodied and elegant red.
When it comes to wine in Italy, the Antinori family needs no introduction: twenty-six generations dedicated to viticulture, with a clear mission: to honour tradition while always looking to the future. And if there is one estate that perfectly embodies this philosophy, it is La Braccesca. We are not in Chianti Classico, but in an equally renowned and fascinating area of Tuscany: between Montepulciano and Cortona. La Braccesca consists of two separate estates, united by a single goal: to produce wines that are an authentic and clear expression of the terroir. On one side is the part that falls within the historic Vino Nobile di Montepulciano area. Here, the undisputed star is Sangiovese, known locally as “Prugnolo Gentile”. An aristocratic grape variety with a long history, it produces red wines of great elegance, structure and ageing potential. On the other side is the Cortona area. If Montepulciano is tradition, Cortona is a winning bet. Here, La Braccesca has focused entirely on an international grape variety, Syrah, which has found its ideal habitat in these clayey soils and generally dry climate. The real magic of La Braccesca lies precisely in this harmonious coexistence between the classicism of Sangiovese and the modernity of Syrah.
