Michele Satta, Località Vigna al Cavaliere, 61 - Castagneto Carducci (LI)
Among the vineyards of Castagneto Carducci, where the salty air of the Tyrrhenian Sea meets the scent of Mediterranean scrub, works Michele Satta, one of the enlightened pioneers of Bolgheri. This is where this deeply characterful red wine is born, perfectly expressing all the nuances of this land rich in contrasts. The Bolgheri area is a natural amphitheatre protected by hills and refreshed by sea breezes. The climate here is mild all year round, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and steadily. The blend of this red is a true varietal mosaic. Sangiovese (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) provide backbone and austerity, while Merlot (20%) softens the edges with its roundness. The finishing touch comes from 10% Syrah and a surprising 10% Teroldego. The latter is Satta’s true “signature”, introduced to give the wine deep colour and a completely original balsamic freshness. In the cellar, respect for the raw material reigns supreme. The grapes are gently destemmed and fermentation takes place spontaneously, using only the indigenous yeasts naturally present on the skins. This process occurs in stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wine then ages for 12 months, dividing its journey between small oak barriques and concrete vats. This technical choice allows the wine to breathe without letting the oak dominate, preserving the crunchiness of the fruit. In the glass it reveals an intense, deep ruby red colour. The aromatic profile opens with ripe cherry and blackberry before moving into notes of leather, sweet tobacco and medicinal herbs. On the palate it is full and enveloping, with tannins that bite just enough while already being beautifully integrated. The finish is long and pleasantly savoury, leaving lingering memories of wild berries and dark spices. This Bolgheri is the ideal companion to traditional Tuscan cuisine. A rare Florentine steak... it is absolutely made for it!
Michele Satta’s signature is a guarantee of authentic elegance, never predictable. A man who witnessed and helped shape the myth of Bolgheri. If you are looking for wines capable of speaking about land, sea and a vision beyond convention, you are in the right place. It all began in 1974, when Michele, a young man originally from the Varese area, arrived in Castagneto Carducci. As he himself likes to recall, he arrived there almost by chance, but his love for this Tuscan land was immediate and overwhelming. He inherited neither castles nor noble titles; he started from the bottom, working as a farm labourer and learning the slow, respectful rhythm of rural culture. The turning point came in 1983, the year of the first harvest and, coincidentally, the same year the Bolgheri DOC was officially established. From that moment onwards, Michele Satta’s journey and that of the denomination ran side by side, making him one of the founding fathers and most innovative figures of the area. The estate’s 23 hectares of vineyards benefit from extraordinary light reflected by the nearby sea, allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly while maintaining vibrant freshness thanks to the winds that cleanse the air. The soils here are deep and well-draining, rich in pebbles and silt, ideal for roots to dig deep in search of complexity. While Bolgheri became famous worldwide for its international grape varieties, Michele Satta always remained a voice outside the chorus. He was the first to believe in an ambitious single-varietal Vermentino, and above all he never abandoned Sangiovese, which he considers the emblem of Tuscan nobility, bringing it to an area where many believed it impossible to cultivate at high levels. But that is not all. Michele Satta was also a pioneer in introducing Syrah and Viognier, convinced that Bolgheri’s complexity could elegantly embrace these varieties too. Today, the winery is experiencing a new youth thanks to the handover to the second generation. His son Giacomo, a passionate agronomist raised among the vines, leads the estate with the same artisanal dedication as his father, supported by his sister Benedetta and the entire family.
