Imagine walking through the vineyards of Castagneto Carducci, where the air smells of salt and the Mediterranean scrub bursts with every breath. Here, just a few steps from the Tuscan coast, Grattamacco’s Vermentino is born. Not your usual quick aperitif wine, but a great wine that speaks of Bolgheri, back when the area was still a bet for a few visionaries. The Grattamacco territory is a perfect microcosm, set between hills and sea. The vineyards benefit from constant ventilation that keeps the grapes dry and healthy, allowing for strict organic farming that respects the natural balance of the soil. Bolgheri DOC is world-famous for its powerful Bordeaux-style blends, yet Vermentino represents the white and authentic soul of this corner of Tuscany. Here, the appellation imposes extremely high quality standards, ensuring that every sip reflects the nobility of the terroir without compromise. In the cellar, two-thirds of the mass ferments in stainless steel to preserve fresh fruit aromas, while the remaining part rests in oak barriques and tonneaux. This passage in wood is not meant to mask the flavour, but to enhance texture and depth. During the six months of ageing, the wine undergoes frequent bâtonnage of the fine lees, giving it creaminess and natural protection that limits the use of sulphites. Bright straw yellow in colour, the nose is very expressive. At first, notes of lime zest and elderflower emerge, followed by hints of aromatic herbs such as thyme and rosemary. On the palate, it is a true pleasure. Freshness is vibrant but never sharp, well balanced by an almost buttery softness that envelops the palate. The finish is long and clean, with that typical almond-like touch that makes you want to refill your glass straight away.
The Grattamacco winery is located between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, in an area of enchanting beauty with panoramic views over the Tuscan coast. Since 2002, it has been part of the ColleMassari Wine Estates group, owned by the Bertarelli family, although the estate dates back to 1977. The vineyards lie at an altitude of around 100–200 metres above sea level, in a protected position in the hills of Bolgheri. The area enjoys a dry climate with significant temperature variations, allowing the cultivation not only of French grape varieties, but also Sangiovese and Vermentino.
