"Groppolo" Vermentino Colli di Luni DOC 2025
    • Vermentino Groppolo, Colli di Luni DOC by Il Monticello, comes from a hill about 100–120 metres above sea level, south-southwest of Sarzana, between Liguria and Tuscany. Here, the soil is a fortunate mix of clay, sand and silt, which gives the wines structure, freshness and minerality. In addition, the sea breezes mitigate the summer heat, while the Apuan Alps reflect light and heat, allowing the grapes to ripen with balance and aromatic intensity. The Colli di Luni DOC, established in 1989, requires at least 90% Vermentino, with the remaining 10% reserved for other native white grapes. Groppolo, however, is 100% Vermentino, the principal grape variety of Liguria and Tuscany, known for its floral and citrus notes and salty touch. The vines, grown on slopes, are up to 30 years old and are cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods. Harvesting is done by hand, usually between the end of August and the beginning of September, to ensure selective picking. After gentle pressing, the must ferments at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, all at low temperatures to preserve the fresh aromas. The wine then remains in contact with the fine lees for a few months, with occasional bâtonnage, to make it smoother. Finally, bottling takes place between January and February. Straw yellow in colour with greenish reflections, the bouquet immediately reveals notes of white flowers, apple, pear, ripe citrus fruits and a touch of herbs such as thyme and basil. On the palate, it is well-balanced, while maintaining a certain freshness. Its natural acidity and marine sapidity are measured and pleasant. Perfect with a classic seafood menu.

The Il Monticello winery, founded in 1982 by Pier Luigi Neri on the beautiful hills surrounding Sarzana, on the border between Liguria and Tuscany, represents a perfect combination of tradition, passion and innovation in winemaking. We are located within the Colli di Luni DOC appellation. The winery covers approximately 14 hectares of vineyards, planted with native grape varieties such as Vermentino, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo, Pollera Nera and Massaretta. Pier Luigi Neri, a respected electronic engineer, started Il Monticello out of pure passion, starting from a 19th-century house surrounded by inherited vineyards. His sons Alessandro and Davide, after completing their studies and attracted to the world of wine from a young age, devoted themselves body and soul to the company, committing themselves to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture. An interesting fact. The winery was one of the first to introduce drones in viticulture to manage the vegetative state of the vines. Il Monticello is much more than a winery: it is a family history, a microcosm of sustainability and authenticity.
