"Melacce" Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC 2025
    • In the territory of Cinigiano, at the foot of Mount Amiata, the sea breeze carries the scents of Mediterranean scrub and refreshes the grapes of the Vermentino vineyards. The same ones used by ColleMassari to produce this Melacce. Here, Vermentino finds its ideal expression, away from excessive heat and nurtured by temperature variations that enhance its aromatic character. We are in the heart of the Maremma Toscana DOC, an appellation that in recent years has managed to shed the label of the “poor cousin” of coastal areas, revealing a personality that is both mountain and maritime. ColleMassari is the soul of this district. A winery that has committed entirely to organic farming, treating the vineyard as a living, breathing ecosystem. Pure Vermentino, the harvest is slightly anticipated, aiming for the precise moment when sugar levels are not yet excessive but acidity is at its peak. Vinification takes place entirely in stainless steel tanks at very low temperatures, a crucial technique to prevent the most delicate aromas from being lost through heat. The real secret of this little gem, however, lies in ageing on the fine lees. By remaining in contact with its own yeasts for a few months, the wine gains that roundness which perfectly balances its natural exuberance, transforming a simple drink into a harmonious experience. Bright straw yellow, almost luminous, the nose is an explosion of freshness: ripe white peach comes first, followed immediately by a mineral streak reminiscent of wet stone. On the palate it is clean-cut, with no frills, showing perfect correspondence between aroma and flavour. The finish is crisp and leaves a pleasant freshness that invites another sip straight away. A white wine that doesn’t want to complicate life, but to make it decidedly more enjoyable. Perfect with mussels in pepper broth or spaghetti with clams, it also works beautifully with fried dishes.
ColleMassari represents the organic heart of Maremma. A corner of Tuscany where nature seems to have maintained a firm pact with man. We are in the Montecucco area, a territory set between the famous hills of Montalcino and the sea breezes of Maremma. Here, in the municipality of Cinigiano, stands the Castello di ColleMassari, a name that for many enthusiasts has become synonymous with sustainable excellence and a vision that blends tradition and modernity. Its contemporary history begins in 1998, when siblings Maria Iris Bertarelli and Claudio Tipa decided to turn their passion for the land into a concrete project. It was not a simple commercial acquisition but a real “love at first sight” for a territory that was still off the radar of the major market, yet endowed with extraordinary potential. Tipa, a man accustomed to great challenges – just think of his family’s connection with the historic sailing team Alinghi and their America’s Cup victories – brought the same precision and dedication to the vineyard. The goal was to create a “Domaine” capable of producing wines with strong identity, while respecting the natural balance of a vast ecosystem that today covers over 1,200 hectares of woodland, olive groves and vineyards. Today, the estate is one of the largest organic realities in Europe and every production choice follows this philosophy. The winery itself is a small masterpiece of bio-architecture, designed by architect Edoardo Milesi and built underground to exploit natural temperature regulation. Here, gravity alone is used to move musts and wines, avoiding mechanical stress and preserving the integrity of the fruit.
