    "El Rayo" DOCa Rioja 2019
  • El Rayo is a wine produced by Bodegas Olarra in the Rioja wine region of Spain. The wine is made from a blend of mainly Tempranillo grapes, to which a small amount of Mazuelo and Graciano grapes are added. The grapes come from old vineyards in the Rioja Alta, where they are cultivated with minimal intervention to ensure maximum quality. At the end of vinification, and before bottling, the wine undergoes its entire malolactic fermentation in new American oak barrels to give it greater finesse and roundness. This is followed by a slow maturation phase, again in wood, before bottle ageing. In the glass it has an intense cherry red colour with violet hues. The aromas are complex, thanks to the long resting period in barrel, with a finish that retains its energy and finesse. In the mouth it reveals a 'wild', fruity and vegetal character. Round and intense, it impresses with the fineness of its well-integrated tannins. A balanced and complex wine, it fully reflects the character of the Rioja wine region.

    Since its foundation, Bodegas Olarra has been recognised as the Gran Catedral del Rioja, the highest exponent of Wine Architecture. Indeed, Juan Antonio Ridruejo's impressive building is one of the earliest examples of architecture applied to a winery, and one of the first designed by a prestigious architect. Constructed on the model of an ancient three-storey Gothic cathedral, it has large spaces for maturing wine that do not require any external system to control the temperature. The bodega, now in its 50-year history, bases everything on the rigorous selection of raw materials, as well as traditional production methods adapted to new times. This has enabled it to mould its products to the tastes of new consumers. Today, the company is managed by the third generation of the Olarra family, represented by three capable young people.
