Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute sarl Via di Nozzole 12 Greve in Chianti (FI)
The Tenuta di Nozzole, historic property of the Folonari family, is located in the heart of Tuscany, in the hills of Greve in Chianti. Here, among others, La Forra is produced, a wine that perfectly represents the essence of Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG. But let's proceed in order. La Forra is produced with grapes from a single vineyard, located between 300 and 330 metres above sea level, characterised by silty-clay soils poor in skeleton. The position of the vineyard, which slopes down from a ridge into a gorge surrounded by woods and lakes, gives the wine a unique complexity. The first harvest dates back to 1980, and since then La Forra has become one of Tenute Folonari's historic crus. The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Vinification involves fermentation in steel tanks, with maceration for about four weeks. It is then aged for at least 24 months in barriques, followed by bottle ageing. In the glass, La Forra has an inviting ruby red colour. The nose immediately reveals aromas of ripe red fruits, balsamic notes and bitter orange, with hints of incense and tea infusion. The palate is dry, with ripe tannins and a pleasant balsamic quality. It finishes with notes of vanilla and chocolate. All this makes La Forra an ideal wine to accompany red meat dishes, game and mature cheeses. More generally, it is ideal with good traditional Tuscan dishes.
The Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari estates are one of the most interesting wineries in Tuscany, with roots dating back to the 18th century. The Folonari family began their wine-making business in the late 1700s, when Lorenzo Folonari, originally from Valtellina, started an entrepreneurial tradition that would profoundly mark the history of Italian wine. In 2000, Ambrogio and his son Giovanni Folonari founded the Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari Tenute winery with the aim of enhancing the family's properties and producing high-quality wines. Today, the company comprises five estates located in some of Tuscany's most renowned areas. Tenuta di Nozzole, located in the heart of Chianti Classico, Le Tenute del Cabreo, in Greve in Chianti, where Supertuscans such as Cabreo Il Borgo and La Pietra are produced. Then there is Tenuta La Fuga, in Montalcino, Campo al Mare in Bolgheri and Vigne in Porrona in the Tuscan Maremma. The Folonari family has always focused on innovation and quality. In recent years, the company has invested over €9 million in the construction of a new winery at Tenute del Cabreo, designed by architect Carlo Ludovico Poccianti.
