Amarone della Valpolicella Classico "Monte Sant'Urbano" DOCG 2019
  • Speri is synonymous with Amarone della Valpolicella. And this Classico Monte Sant'Urbano 2017 is one of the winery's symbols. Loved by enthusiasts and experts at every latitude, this important red is certainly not an everyday wine. But when the occasion is right, a bottle of Amarone can be uncorked with confidence. Grapes from estate vineyards on Monte Sant'Urbano in the municipality of Fumane, the vines have a high average age. Corvina Veronese and Corvinone in this case make up about 70% of the blend, with Rondinella accounting for 25% and Molinara for the remainder. Vinification begins with a careful selection of the best bunches, which are dried for about 100 days, resulting in a weight loss of about 40%. After processing, the wine then rests in the cellar for 24 months in French oak tonneaux, followed by a further 18 months in medium-large Slavonian oak casks. Finally, after bottling, a further 12 months of bottle ageing follows. Deep garnet red in colour, this Amarone has an ethereal bouquet reminiscent of dried fruit. In the mouth it is full-bodied, warm, enveloping and dry. An important wine of rare elegance, it lends itself well to ageing. At the table, it calls for robust main courses of red meat such as braised meats and game. But it is also excellent with mature cheeses or as a meditation wine for late-night chatting with lifelong friends.

When one thinks of the Speri family, there are always two fundamental points. Tradition, strong indeed. And innovation, without fear. A historic family of Valpolicella, in fact, Speri is a faithful interpreter of the most prestigious wine of its land, Amarone. A bond so deep that over the years it has made Speri an authoritative point of reference in oenology. But if this is something that is known to all, what may not be as well known is that the Veronese company is one that, even in times long past, has made safeguarding the environment one of its strong points. Today it is the one with the largest extension of hectares under organic cultivation, within the Classic zone. So tradition... with an eye to the future.
