What links Julius Caesar to a promontory stretching towards the Aeolian Islands? Wine, of course! Mamertino, once the emperor's wine, is now revived at Capo Milazzo by Planeta. We are almost at sea level, in the oasis of La Baronia. Dark alluvial soils, veined with ancient granite and embellished with a veil of ash stolen from Mount Etna by the wind. Among the olive trees and prickly pears stands the small winery where part of the proceeds are used to support the educational projects of the Barone Lucifero Foundation, transforming wine into a gesture of solidarity. The Mamertino DOC, rediscovered only in 2004 after centuries of oblivion, covers just a few dozen hectares between Milazzo and the neighbouring municipalities. Low yields, almost artisanal viticulture and regulations that protect the historic Nero d'Avola-Nocera pairing. It is tangible proof that on an island famous for large numbers, there are still precious niches to be preserved. In the countryside, the approach is organic and SOStain certified, with barley and vetch cover crops and minimal use of pesticides. Harvesting is done by hand in 15 kg crates. After careful sorting, the grapes ferment in steel tanks with frequent pumping over. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine rests for twelve months in 25-hectolitre oak barrels. The wood rounds out the wine without masking it, allowing the territory to speak for itself. In the glass, it shines with a beautiful intense ruby colour with purple reflections. The bouquet starts with Mediterranean scrub and myrtle, then veers towards blackberries, blueberries and a hint of jam. In the background, there are hints of graphite and violet. On the palate, it is full but lively, with dense tannins, saline acidity and a balsamic note that lengthens the finish with hints of black cherry and light cocoa. It is certainly not a “heavyweight”. It is more like an elegant athlete who moves forward with sure steps.
When it comes to contemporary Sicilian wine, Planeta is one of the first names that comes to mind. The family has been growing vines for seventeen generations, but the real leap in quality came in the 1990s, when cousins Francesca and Alessio Planeta transformed the family farm into a wine-making project spread across the island. Today, Francesca is president, while Alessio, the winemaker, coordinates a production of nearly 2.4 million bottles without compromising on a craft approach to detail. The philosophy is as simple as it is ambitious: to tell the story of Sicily as a whole, highlighting the differences in soil, climate and culture of each area. This is why Planeta does not have a single winery, but five estates – Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Etna and Capo Milazzo – designed as stops on an ideal journey between coastline, highlands and volcanoes. Each site is a bastion of biodiversity and a micro-winemaking laboratory, because “every soil deserves its own voice”. Respect for the environment is the other pillar. From 2022, the entire range will be certified organic. In addition, Planeta adheres to the SOStain protocol, the first sustainability standard designed for Sicilian viticulture. The “Planeta Terra” project goes even further: lighter bottles produced 100% on the island, energy from renewable sources, reforestation of Mediterranean scrub and permanent vegetation cover between the rows. A concrete commitment that transforms sustainability from a slogan into everyday practice.
