What could be more fascinating than a wine that comes from land shaped by fire and history? Just like this Etna Rosso DOC from Planeta. A red wine that expresses the soul of Europe's highest volcano with balance and character. But let's start from the beginning. The vineyard is located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, at an altitude of about 700-800 metres. Here, the volcanic soil is a mixture of sand and lava rocks which, together with the significant temperature variations between day and night, create the ideal environment for growing high-quality grapes. The climate, which combines the energy of the Mediterranean sun with the freshness of the mountain air, helps to preserve the freshness and aromatic complexity of the wine. This red wine from Planeta is a single-varietal wine made from 100% Nerello Mascalese. The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October, when they reach perfect ripeness, resulting in a product that expresses freshness and structure in a balanced way. The grape variety, known for its tannic finesse and its ability to reflect the territory, finds an ideal habitat on Etna thanks to the mineral richness of the soil. Controlled fermentation in steel at a controlled temperature to preserve aromatic purity. Maceration lasts around 12-15 days, during which gentle punching down is carried out to extract colour and soft tannins. Ageing lasts around 8 months in oak barrels of various sizes, which soften the structure without masking the original character of the terroir. In the glass, this Etna Rosso is bright ruby red, light and transparent. The bouquet is fine, with notes of red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by hints of light spices and a touch of damp earth that recalls its volcanic origin. In the mouth, it is elegant and smooth, with gentle tannins and a fresh, savoury finish that invites you to take another sip, typical of mountain wines. It has good ageing potential: it can easily be cellared for up to 7-8 years. Over time, the fruity notes evolve into more complex hints of tobacco and undergrowth, without losing its ability to remain fresh and dynamic.
When it comes to contemporary Sicilian wine, Planeta is one of the first names that comes to mind. The family has been growing vines for seventeen generations, but the real leap in quality came in the 1990s, when cousins Francesca and Alessio Planeta transformed the family farm into a wine-making project spread across the island. Today, Francesca is president, while Alessio, an oenologist, coordinates a production of almost 2.4 million bottles without compromising on a craft approach to detail. The philosophy is as simple as it is ambitious: to tell the story of Sicily as a whole, highlighting the differences in soil, climate and culture of each area. This is why Planeta does not have a single winery, but five estates – Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Etna and Capo Milazzo – designed as stops on an ideal journey between coastlines, plateaus and volcanoes. Each site is a bastion of biodiversity and a micro-winemaking laboratory, because “every soil deserves its own voice”. Respect for the environment is the other pillar. From 2022, the entire range will be certified organic. In addition, Planeta adheres to the SOStain protocol, the first sustainability standard designed for Sicilian viticulture. The “Planeta Terra” project goes even further: lighter bottles produced 100% on the island, energy from renewable sources, reforestation of Mediterranean scrub and permanent vegetation cover between the rows.
