It is rare to find a Riesling that captures Sicily with the freshness of a mountain breeze and the intensity of an active volcano. Planeta's Eruzione 1614 Riesling does just that. A white wine bearing the signature of Mount Etna, but with a unique character. The vineyard is located in the Sciaranuova district, on the northern slope of Etna, at an altitude of between 820 and 860 metres. Here, history blends with geology: the dark soil is the result of the longest eruption ever recorded on Etna, which lasted ten years, from 1614 to 1624. The mineral-rich volcanic sand, together with significant temperature variations, with hot days and cool nights, create ideal conditions for Riesling, which develops complex aromas while maintaining a pleasant freshness. Of interest is the presence, nearby, of “nevère”, ancient pits dug into the volcanic rock where snow was once stored for domestic and commercial use, a small tangible sign of the past of this living land. Pure Riesling, the grapes are harvested by hand between mid and late October from vines grown on very poor volcanic soils, with yields controlled to concentrate aromas and acidity. The late harvest allows the grapes to reach a balanced ripeness without losing their typical freshness. In the cellar, the focus is on delicacy. The grapes are taken to a low-temperature cellar (8 °C) and then fermented slowly in steel to preserve the finest aromas. The wine then remains in contact with the yeasts until June, with occasional bâtonnage to give body without weighing it down, while ageing takes place exclusively in steel, carefully avoiding wood so as not to mask the original character of the Riesling. Pale straw yellow in colour, bright on the nose with notes of citrus fruits such as grapefruit and bergamot, enriched by hints of white peach, acacia flowers and a mineral hint of flint. Fresh and vibrant on the palate, it is harmonious, balancing acidity and sapidity, and closing with a long, clean finish marked by a delicate bitter note that stimulates the palate to take another sip. Already enjoyable today, this Riesling shows good ageing potential of up to 8-10 years. With time, its bouquet gains complexity, developing hints of honey, aromatic herbs and more mature notes without losing its essence as a fresh and straightforward wine. Perfect with fish dishes such as clam soup or baked sea bass. It also pairs well with fresh cheeses and light vegetable dishes, such as a fennel and orange salad. Finally, it surprises with spicy dishes such as prawn curry.
When it comes to contemporary Sicilian wine, Planeta is one of the first names that comes to mind. The family has been growing vines for seventeen generations, but the real leap in quality came in the 1990s, when cousins Francesca and Alessio Planeta transformed the family farm into a wine-making project spread across the island. Today, Francesca is president, while Alessio, an oenologist, coordinates a production of almost 2.4 million bottles without compromising on a craft approach to detail. The philosophy is as simple as it is ambitious: to tell the story of Sicily as a whole, highlighting the differences in soil, climate and culture of each area. This is why Planeta does not have a single winery, but five estates – Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Etna and Capo Milazzo – designed as stops on an ideal journey between coastlines, plateaus and volcanoes. Each site is a bastion of biodiversity and a micro-winemaking laboratory, because “every soil deserves its own voice”. Respect for the environment is the other pillar. From 2022, the entire range will be certified organic. In addition, Planeta adheres to the SOStain protocol, the first sustainability standard designed for Sicilian viticulture. The “Planeta Terra” project goes even further: lighter bottles produced 100% on the island, energy from renewable sources, reforestation of Mediterranean scrub and permanent vegetation cover between the rows. A concrete commitment that transforms sustainability from a slogan into everyday practice.
