There are wineries that every wine enthusiast thinks they know everything about. Simply because they have always represented the world of Italian wine. Among these, Donnafugata undoubtedly occupies a special place. For many, this winery is synonymous with Sicily and quality wine. A historic brand owned by the Rallo family, Donnafugata produces wines in different areas of Sicily. From east to west, from Trapani to Etna, there is no area in Sicily suitable for wine production where Donnafugata does not own a vineyard. What few people know, however, is that the name Donnafugata is due to Gabriella Rallo, wife of the founder and mother of the two enterprising current managers of the company. Gabriella Anca Rallo, a courageous woman with a penchant for innovation, was a pioneer of quality viticulture in Sicily. She is the real “donnafugata” (woman on the run) who abandoned her job as a teacher to devote herself full-time to the vineyards of Contessa Entellina. She was one of the first women in Sicily to produce wine, in a sector typically dominated by men. A true pioneer of quality viticulture for women. All that remains is to say thank you to Gabriella.
