Imbottigliato all'origine da Tenute Nicosia- Via Luigi Capuana, 65- 95039 Trecastagni (CT)
A fascinating vineyard rooted in an ancient extinct volcanic cone. This is the setting where Etna Bianco Monte S. Nicolò is born. A secondary crater on the south-eastern slope of Europe’s most active volcano. Here nature has created a spectacular natural amphitheatre, where the dark soil tells stories of fire and millennia-old lava flows. The area is Trecastagni, in the province of Catania, within one of the estates owned by the Nicosia family. This particular plot of land is a true paradise of biodiversity, cultivated under strict organic farming principles. The local microclimate is unique. Strong temperature differences between day and night caress the vines, slowing the ripening of the grapes. The plants grow on terraced soils composed of black volcanic sands, extremely rich in minerals and rocky elements. This extreme terroir gives the wine a distinctive signature, almost like a liquid photograph of the mountain itself. In this bottle the undisputed protagonist is Carricante, the flagship grape of the volcano, supported by small percentages of Catarratto. Carricante sets the rhythm, providing a sharp acidic backbone and a natural aptitude for minerality. Catarratto plays a supporting role, enriching the blend with a pleasant softness and fruity nuances that smooth out the sharper edges. The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates to avoid damaging the berries. In the cellar, gentle pressing is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then rests on its fine lees for several months. In the glass it displays a bright straw-yellow colour with brilliant reflections. On the nose the impact is clean and refined. Precise aromas of fresh citrus fruits, white peach and green apple are immediately enriched by floral notes of orange blossom. The background is a clear declaration of love for the territory, with intense volcanic nuances and iodine-like hints reminiscent of sea breezes. On the palate it impresses with its energy. The sip is taut, savoury and linear, driven by vibrant acidity. The finish is long, citrus-driven and clean, leaving the mouth refreshed and satisfied. Perfect with baked sea bass or seafood risotto. It is also excellent with simple but delicious spaghetti alla chitarra with bottarga and lemon zest.
Who knows whether in 1898, when Francesco Nicosia, great-grandfather of the current owner, decided to open his first wine shop in Trecastagni, he already knew that Mount Etna would one day become the very symbol of quality wine in Sicily. He probably hoped so. Even then, Etna wines were known and appreciated throughout Europe for their mineral strength and volcanic personality. From those fortunate beginnings to today’s management, the journey has been long but consistent. Today the company is led by Carmelo Nicosia, who focused on revitalising the estate through vineyard expansion and renewal, as well as the construction of a modern winery. Today Cantine Nicosia is a dynamic, modern and efficient company, able to look towards the future while fully respecting tradition, thanks to a young but highly skilled team. Indigenous grape varieties and international varieties well adapted to the Sicilian climate coexist to create wines of great personality, produced with full respect for the environment. The winery remains based in Trecastagni, while much of the estate’s vineyards lie nearby at the foot of Monte Gorna, one of Etna’s many extinct craters. The company also owns extensive land in Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa, home of Cerasuolo DOCG production, and directly manages large vineyard holdings throughout Sicily.
