The unoaked 2018 Etna Bianco Buonora is a linear and crisp expression of the Carricante grape that is native to this part of Sicily and does particularly well on Etna. The grape absorbs the direct freshness and salinity of these volcanic soils with a snappy and crisp style that is likely to take on volume and depth as the wine continues its bottle evolution. White peach and citrus are enhanced by honey, rose and a Riesling-like touch of diesel fuel. Some 25,000 bottles were released.
Trust me, it's not just suggestion. Nor is it because this wine comes from the very slopes of one of the world's most active volcanoes. But when you bring your nose closer to the glass of this Buonora, a surprising pure Carricante, you really do smell an unmistakable note of sulfur and hydrocarbons. It seems that the volcano is right there, just a few inches away from us even though fortunately we are hundreds of miles from its smoking mouth. Buonora is an amazing wine, rich and powerful. At the same time it is deep and elegant. A great white that is already good today, a few months after the harvest, but that in the cellar is not afraid to wait for the right opportunity.
Eight generations. Over 200 years of wine history in Sicily. What more could anyone want? Perhaps only the ownership of one of the most famous estates on the island, Regaleali, from which many of the company's best-known wines come. We are obviously talking about Tasca d'Almerita, rightly considered one of the most interesting realities of our country. The challenge of the 2000s for the last heirs of the dynasty is to achieve environmental sustainability on the company's vast estates. Estates that can be found in practically every corner of Sicily. Alongside the historic Regaleali estate in Sclafani, Palermo, Tasca now also works vineyards in Salina, the land of Malvasia, on the island of Mothia, where Marsala was born and where small plots of Grillo grapes can still be found today, in Camporeale and even on the northern slope of Etna, where native vines dominate and are cultivated at altitude in terraced vineyards.
