    CHARACTERISTICS
    • TypeVino bianco fermo
    • Location Sicily
    • Grapes fiano 100%
    • Sensations A pure Fiano from calcareous-clay soils that help to enhance the aromatic markers of the Mediterranean scrub typical of this grape variety. Thus, among the broom and thyme, delicate aromas of chamomile, hay, mango and pomelo can be detected. The palate is mineral with traces of vibrant sapidity that shake and quench the thirst. Then the rhythm changes to become slower and more harmonious, inviting you to sip this signature white wine with the right calm, fully enjoying every nuance. The finish offers a silky tactile sensation with a very refined aftertaste of ripe apricots, almond blossoms and basil leaves.
    • Vinification The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg crates and refrigerated at around 12-13 °C. They were then destemmed, crushed and gently pressed, followed by static sedimentation in stainless steel at a low temperature of 6-7 °C. The clear part was then racked and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 90% and in 36 hl oak barrels for 10% at approximately 14-15 °C for 12-14 days. At the end of fermentation, the wine was topped up with the same mass, leaving it on the primary lees, with weekly stirring using bâtonner or agitator; in February, after a period of about 4 months, the wine was racked, separating it from the coarse lees and leaving it on the finer lees with weekly stirring. Finally, it was blended and prepared for bottling. Ageing: steel, 36 hl Allier oak barrels and tonneaux.

    "Cometa" Menfi DOC 2023
    • Do you know the secret of a great white wine capable of turning the heads of sommeliers around the world? Sometimes it's an unexpected journey. A grape variety that finds its true home far from its origins. And that's exactly what happened to Fiano in Sicily. Cometa di Planeta is living proof of this. But let's proceed in order. Menfi, in the heart of south-western Sicily. Here, the sun gently caresses the vineyards of Dispensa and Gurra, about 75 metres above sea level. The sea breeze carries intoxicating aromas, while the calcareous-clayey soils give the grapes a unique and unmistakable character. It is here that Planeta, a family with a history of farming dating back to the 1500s, had the happy intuition to bring the noble Fiano grape variety, originally from Campania, and cultivate it with the same dedication that has made them a benchmark in sustainability and organic farming, following the SOStain protocol. Cometa is therefore made from 100% Fiano grapes, a variety known for its marked acidity and sapidity, which give the wine extraordinary ageing potential and surprising aromatic complexity. Each sip reveals the meticulous work in the vineyard, where the harvest takes place at the end of August to capture the optimal freshness of the grapes. After vinification, a small portion of the wine is aged in barriques, then refined for several months in both steel and large barrels and tonneaux. This ageing on fine lees helps to develop a complexity and softness that make Cometa a wine of rare harmony. Deep straw yellow in colour, embellished with greenish reflections that anticipate its freshness, the nose reveals an explosion of aromas: from Mediterranean scrub to citrus hints of mandarin and pomelo, to more delicate notes of chamomile, hay, white peach and a surprising hint of peppermint. On the palate, it is vibrant and mineral, with an enveloping sapidity that cleanses the palate. Intense yet balanced, with a long, persistent finish reminiscent of ripe apricots and a pleasant note of basil.

When it comes to contemporary Sicilian wine, Planeta is one of the first names that comes to mind. The family has been growing vines for seventeen generations, but the real leap in quality came in the 1990s, when cousins Francesca and Alessio Planeta transformed the family farm into a wine-making project spread across the island. Today, Francesca is president, while Alessio, the winemaker, coordinates a production of almost 2.4 million bottles without compromising on a craft approach to detail. The philosophy is as simple as it is ambitious: to tell the story of Sicily as a whole, highlighting the differences in soil, climate and culture of each area. This is why Planeta does not have a single winery, but five estates – Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Etna and Capo Milazzo – designed as stops on an ideal journey between coastline, highlands and volcanoes. Each site is a bastion of biodiversity and a micro-winemaking laboratory, because “every soil deserves its own voice”. Respect for the environment is the other pillar. From 2022, the entire range will be certified organic. In addition, Planeta adheres to the SOStain protocol, the first sustainability standard designed for Sicilian viticulture. The “Planeta Terra” project goes even further: lighter bottles produced entirely on the island, energy from renewable sources, reforestation of Mediterranean scrub and permanent vegetation cover between the rows. A concrete commitment that transforms sustainability from a slogan into everyday practice.
