"Sounds of Silence" Pinot Noir 2024
    • Today we stand before an isolated vineyard clinging to the steep southern slopes of the Groenland Mountains, where the only sound is the whistle of the wind brushing through the vegetation. In this almost mystical setting, dominated by absolute silence, Sounds of Silence comes to life. An extraordinary red wine that transforms solitude and mountain austerity into a remarkably graceful expression. We are in the celebrated Elgin Valley, a South African plateau that challenges convention and redefines the wine geography of the New World. This specific micro-region is surrounded by majestic mountains that isolate the vineyards, creating a unique and protected ecosystem. The high-altitude soils force the vines to push their roots deep into the earth in search of nourishment. This heroic viticulture results in compact bunches rich in mineral character. Here Oak Valley grows its finest Pinot Noir, which finds its ideal habitat among these mountains, thriving in a delicate and precise balance between full ripeness and vibrant acidity. Winemaking involves gentle maceration at controlled temperatures in order to extract only the noblest tannins and the most elegant aromatic precursors, avoiding any excess. The wine then matures for nine months in French oak barriques. The use of oak is careful and restrained, with only 13% new barrels, a deliberate choice not to overpower the original soul of the grape variety. Transparent ruby red in colour with remarkable brightness, typical of the variety. On the nose it reveals a refined floral and fruity bouquet, with sweet cherry aromas, violet nuances and hints of rose petals. On the palate it is silky and vibrant. Fresh blueberries and ripe cherry fill the mouth, balanced by incredible acidity that brings energy and freshness. The finish is long, clean and enhanced by a delicate touch of oak spice.

There are places in the wine world capable of completely redefining the geographical identity of a territory. One of these is undoubtedly Oak Valley, a remarkable estate located in the heart of the Elgin Valley in South Africa. If this area is now internationally celebrated for producing extraordinarily elegant cool-climate wines, much of the credit belongs to the vision, determination and long-standing history of this family-run estate, now in its fifth generation. Everything began back in 1898 thanks to Sir Antonie Viljoen, a doctor educated in Edinburgh and a senator in the Cape Parliament. A man of lively intellect and an exceptional farmer, Sir Antonie purchased the Oak Valley lands and planted the region’s first commercial apple orchards. It was an intuition that transformed the local economy: for almost a century, Elgin was associated exclusively with fruit production. But Sir Antonie did not stop there. A lover of nature, he planted a vast forest of English oak trees – today numbering more than 4,000 trees across 30 hectares and giving the estate its name – and commissioned the valley’s first winery in 1908. Although wine production was temporarily interrupted in the 1940s to make room for the pressing wartime demand for fruit, the seed of fine viticulture had already been planted. The real return to wine came more recently, when the Rawbone-Viljoen family decided to harness Elgin’s extraordinary climatic potential to create wines with a truly distinctive profile. The Elgin Valley is indeed a very special geographical district: an elevated plateau surrounded by majestic mountains and located just 20 kilometres from the ocean. This position guarantees an exceptionally cool microclimate, with generous rainfall, frequent cloud cover and marked temperature variations. During summer evenings, cool air descends from the mountains and brushes through the vineyards like an invisible river, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. Oak Valley’s production philosophy is based on deep respect for the land and integrated sustainable management, certified by IPW (Integrated Production of Wine). The estate is a vibrant and diverse ecosystem, where vineyards coexist with historic apple and pear orchards, flower greenhouses, livestock farming and free-range pigs fed on the acorns of the historic oak trees.
