Alvi's Drift Wines International P O Box 126, 6849 Worcester, South Africa
Alvi’s Drift Pinotage 221 is a red wine with remarkable character. A wine that absolutely deserves to be tasted if you want to explore the fascinating world of South African wines. We are in the Worcester wine region, within the exclusive area of Scherpenheuvel. Here, the landscape is dominated by majestic mountains and a Mediterranean climate that brings warm summers softened by cool evening breezes. The limestone and alluvial soils are perfect for viticulture. Worcester is one of South Africa’s most dynamic and significant wine regions, capable of producing wines with excellent value for money and strong territorial identity. The grapes, 100% Pinotage, come from selected vineyards and are harvested strictly by hand. After destemming and crushing, the grapes undergo cold maceration followed by at least one week of fermentation on the skins. To give the wine extra complexity, at least 30% of the blend, sourced mainly from older vines, is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in American oak barrels for a full 12 months. The remaining portion rests in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of the fruit. In the glass it reveals an intense colour reminiscent of black cherry, enhanced by a youthful purple rim. On the nose the impact is captivating, with clear aromas of blackberry and red cherry giving way to elegant hints of sweet spices and vanilla. On the palate it reveals an incredibly balanced medium-bodied structure. Red cherry returns to centre stage, accompanied by lively acidity, attractive fruit and soft, enveloping tannins. The finish is clean, pleasant and decidedly persistent. Perfect to uncork at your next barbecue, where its acidity cleanses the palate beautifully.
Welcome to the heart of the Breede River Valley, around two hours by car from Cape Town, South Africa. Here, in a land where nature expresses itself with overwhelming strength and generosity, stands Alvi’s Drift, a private winery with one of the most fascinating family and winemaking stories in South Africa. Everything began in 1928, when family patriarch Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, still affectionately known today as “Oupa Alvi” (Grandpa Alvi), purchased fertile land along the banks of the Breede River. Oupa Alvi was no ordinary man: alongside his visionary approach to farming, he was a pillar of the local community and an outstanding rugby player, famously scoring the first historic try for the Springboks (the South African national team) against the All Blacks on African soil. In 1930, to allow residents and workers to cross the river safely, he had a low-level bridge built. That structure quickly became known as “Alvi’s Drift”, meaning Alvi’s ford, a landmark that proudly gives the winery its name today, celebrating its strong connection to the land and the community spirit of its origins. Today, the estate is run by the third generation of the family, with Alvi van der Merwe, grandson of the founder and a former doctor turned winemaker, working alongside his brother Johan. The property is a vast and vibrant ecosystem: in addition to around 410 hectares of vineyards, it includes a modern dairy, orchards and even a private game reserve where native species such as springbok, eland and ostriches roam freely.
