Have you ever wondered what happens when Italian winemaking tradition meets the wild landscapes of Stellenbosch? The answer lies in this bottle signed by Idiom. The winery’s story began in 1950, when Alberto Bottega left a small village in Friuli as a child to move to Cape Town. Years later, driven by his love for great wines, he decided to turn a dream into reality. He purchased a spectacular estate on the slopes of the Helderberg mountains, in the southern part of Stellenbosch. From here, the view stretches across the entire False Bay peninsula in a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. Ocean winds constantly cool the vineyards, softening the African heat and creating a perfect microclimate. This particular label belongs to the prestigious Cape Blend classification. It is not simply a blend, but a true declaration of territorial identity regulated by local producers. To qualify for this title, the blend must contain a significant percentage of Pinotage. This grape variety is South Africa’s national pride, created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. In the “C” Cape Blend, Pinotage leads the composition with 40% of the total, giving the wine its unmistakable indigenous character. Supporting it are noble Bordeaux varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes 38%, providing structure and backbone, while Merlot and Petit Verdot each add 11%, bringing softness, deep colour and spicy nuances. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a five-day cold maceration to gently extract the freshest aromas. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Afterwards, malolactic fermentation occurs on oak staves inside the steel tanks. The crucial stage is ageing: the wines mature separately for 10 months in 225-litre French and American oak barrels, 45% of them new. Only after this period does the final blending take place, followed by a further 2 to 4 months of ageing in oak to harmonise the components. In the glass it reveals an impenetrable, velvety ruby-red colour. On the nose the impact is deeply intriguing. Explosive layers of red fruit evolve into notes of ripe plum, sweet tobacco and an indulgent hint reminiscent of red velvet cake. On the palate it reveals a powerful structure with no harsh edges. The tannins are extraordinarily soft and perfectly integrated. The balance between freshness and fruit density creates a complex sip that unfolds into a long, warm and persistent finish. At the table it calls for intense dishes such as beef fillet with green peppercorn sauce or wild boar stew.
