    "Privada" Family Blend 2024
    • An English railway engineer who, in the middle of building a railway line between Argentina and Chile at the end of the 19th century, decides to stop because he is completely captivated by the beauty of the vineyards at the foot of the Andes. This is not the opening of a novel, but the true story of Edmund James Palmer Norton who, in 1895, founded the winery that still bears his name today. Bodega Norton now belongs to the Swarovski family, who have managed to preserve Norton’s artisanal soul while adding a touch of international precision and a deep commitment to sustainability. Privada Blend, a Vegan-certified wine, is born in Luján de Cuyo, considered the “promised land” of Argentine wine. The vineyards lie between 900 and 1100 metres above sea level, where the climate is dry and the days are bathed in intense sunshine. Yet it is the temperature variation that creates the true magic. At night, the cool air descending from the snow-capped Andes slows grape ripening, preserving the varietal aromas that would otherwise be lost. The name “Privada” was not chosen by chance: originally, this reserve was intended exclusively for the private collection of the owning family and shared only with their closest friends. It is therefore a blend born purely out of passion, designed to represent the absolute excellence of the estate. Faithful to the philosophy of the “perfect blend”, typical of Argentina’s great reserves, this label is the result of a skilful interplay: Malbec (40%) brings sweetness of fruit and impenetrable colour, Merlot (40%) adds softness and roundness to the palate, while Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) completes the wine with structure, tannins and the backbone needed to stand the test of time. The vineyards used are of very advanced age, often more than 50 to 80 years old, guaranteeing a concentration of flavour that only old vines can provide. The wine matures for 16 months in new French oak barriques. This choice stabilises the colour and enriches the aromatic profile with noble tertiary notes. After bottling, Privada rests for a further 12 months in the Bodega’s cellars, reaching the table only once it has learned to harmonise the power of the Andean sun with the elegance of oak, becoming a true benchmark for high-end dining. In the glass, it impresses with its deep ruby-red colour and violet reflections. On the nose, ripe black fruits such as plum and blackcurrant appear immediately, followed by hints of dark cocoa, roasted coffee and a touch of black pepper. On the palate, it is broad, almost textural, with silky tannins perfectly integrated into the wine. The persistence is exceptionally long, leaving behind a spicy memory that calls for a second glass. This is a red wine that takes no shortcuts, but goes straight to the point with innate class.

Bodega Norton is located in the heart of Mendoza, precisely in the famous Luján de Cuyo area. This winery is not just a wine producer, but a piece of history that continues to shine at the foot of the majestic Andes mountains. Everything began in 1895, at a time when Argentine viticulture was dominated by Italian, French and Spanish immigrants. Yet one unusual figure emerged: Sir Edmund James Palmer Norton. An English engineer working on the construction of the trans-Andean railway, Norton was literally captivated by the terroir of Perdriel. He realised that this arid land, scorched by relentless sunshine and refreshed by mountain winds, was the perfect place for vineyards. He therefore imported vine cuttings directly from France, founding what would become the first winery established south of the Mendoza River. If Sir Edmund laid the foundations, the true turning point came in 1989 when Gernot Langes-Swarovski, magnate of the famous crystal empire, visited Mendoza and — just like the founder almost a century earlier — fell completely in love with it. He became the first foreign investor to believe in the potential of premium Argentine wines. Today, the winery is led by his son, Michael Halstrick, who has successfully combined artisanal excellence with a modern and sustainable vision. Under his leadership, Norton has become synonymous with precision, balance and environmental respect. Bodega Norton can rely on five estates spread across the finest microclimates of Mendoza. Here, the vines are not simply plants, but true “old ladies”: many of them are more than 80 years old. This maturity allows the winery to produce grapes with a concentration and aromatic complexity impossible to achieve from younger vineyards.
