Bodega Norton – Ruta Provincial 15 Km 23,5, Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina
We are in Luján de Cuyo, considered the “promised land” of Argentine wine. The vineyards lie between 900 and 1100 metres above sea level. Here, the climate is dry and the days are bathed in intense sunshine. But it is the temperature variation that creates the real magic. At night, the cool air descending from the snow-capped Andes slows down the ripening of the grapes, preserving the varietal aromas that would otherwise be lost. The soil is poor and stony, forcing the roots to dig deep in search of nutrients. This effort by the vines results in a wine of great character and concentration. A pure Cabernet Sauvignon, born from this close interaction with the terroir. After careful vinification, the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barriques, both first and second use. This is a crucial step to soften the edges of the Cabernet and give it that roundness which makes it so appealing. It then rests for a further 10 months in bottle before release, achieving its final balance. In the glass, it shows a deep, almost impenetrable ruby red colour. On the nose, a complex bouquet reveals ripe black fruit such as blackberry and blackcurrant, along with spicy notes of black pepper. A sweet background of vanilla and tobacco from the oak follows. On the palate, it is intense without being excessive. The tannins are present yet silky, well integrated into a velvety texture that leads to a long, persistent finish. This is a red that makes its point from the very first sip. A wine that knows how to wait for the right moment, but also delivers great satisfaction when opened straight away.
Bodega Norton is located in the heart of Mendoza, precisely in the renowned area of Luján de Cuyo. This winery is not just a business, but a piece of history that continues to shine at the foot of the majestic Andes. Everything began back in 1895, at a time when Argentine viticulture was dominated by Italian, French and Spanish immigrants. Among them emerged an extraordinary figure: Sir Edmund James Palmer Norton. An English engineer involved in the construction of the trans-Andean railway, Norton was deeply struck by the terroir of Perdriel. He realised that this arid land, bathed in relentless sunshine and cooled by mountain breezes, was the perfect place to plant vines. He imported vine cuttings directly from France, founding what would become the first winery established south of the Mendoza River. If Sir Edmund laid the foundations, the turning point came in 1989 when Gernot Langes-Swarovski, the magnate behind the famous crystal empire, visited Mendoza and, just like the founder nearly a century earlier, fell in love with it. He became the first foreign investor to believe in the potential of high-quality Argentine wines. Today, the winery is led by his son Michael Halstrick, who has combined artisanal excellence with a modern and sustainable vision. Under his guidance, Norton has become synonymous with precision, balance and respect for the environment. Bodega Norton owns five estates across the most suitable microclimates of Mendoza. Here, the vines are not just plants but true “old ladies”: many are over 80 years old. This maturity allows for grapes with a concentration and aromatic complexity that young vines simply cannot achieve.
