Bodega Trapiche – Nueva Mayorga s/n, Coquimbito, Maipú, Mendoza, Argentina
At the foot of the towering Andes, the air is thin and the sun beats down relentlessly. Here, among the dusty yet fertile lands of Mendoza, Malbec has found not just a home, but the perfect stage on which to become a global legend. Bodega Trapiche, founded in 1883, was among the very first wineries to recognise this extraordinary potential. We are in Cruz de Piedra, an area of Maipú often described as the cradle of Argentine wine. The terroir is defined by an arid microclimate and alluvial soils packed with stones and gravel. This structure provides excellent drainage, forcing the vines to struggle and root deeply in search of nourishment. Although Malbec was born in France, it is here that the grape learned to express itself with a softness and concentration of fruit that are almost impossible to replicate elsewhere. Malbec thrives on sunlight, and here it receives it in abundance, producing healthy grapes with thick skins rich in anthocyanins, responsible for the wine’s deep, dark colour. The vineyards sit at around 700 metres above sea level, where solar radiation is particularly intense. After careful grape selection and temperature-controlled vinification, the wine spends several months partially ageing in French oak barriques. The purpose of the wood is not to overpower the wine, but to soften the tannins and add the spicy complexity that transforms it from an everyday red into a characterful Reserva. Deep violet-red in colour, almost black at its core, the nose bursts with ripe fruit: black plum and blackberry lead the way, followed by sweet vanilla and hints of dark chocolate. On the palate it is full-bodied and enveloping. The tannins are incredibly silky, almost creamy, making the wine wonderfully smooth despite its structure. The finish is long and consistent, with lingering toasted notes that leave the palate clean and satisfied. This is a wine that always delivers and never overcomplicates things. Made for grilled meat: an entrecôte or a traditional Argentine asado are ideal partners, as the juiciness of the meat perfectly matches the softness of the Malbec. Equally impressive with rich pasta dishes such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù or hearty game dishes.
Bodega Trapiche is not only one of the oldest and most awarded wineries in Argentina, but also a true compass that helped guide Malbec towards worldwide success. Founded in Mendoza in 1883, Trapiche transformed the semi-arid lands at the foot of the Andes into a benchmark for fine winemaking, while preserving the charm that has defined the winery for more than 140 years. Everything began in a small vineyard called “El Trapiche” in the district of Godoy Cruz. From that moment onwards, the winery never stopped looking ahead. Trapiche was the first Argentine producer to introduce French oak barriques and to invest in international grape varieties at a time when the local market remained extremely conservative. Today the heart of the winery lies in Maipú, inside a magnificent Florentine Renaissance-style building dating back to 1912. Stepping inside feels like travelling through time: historic walls coexist with cutting-edge technology, creating a perfect dialogue between tradition and precision. Trapiche owns more than 1,200 hectares of vineyards, but its real strength lies in its profound understanding of terroir. The winery was among the first to explore the concept of “micro-terroirs”, recognising how altitude and soil composition could shape the personality of each individual parcel.
