Bodega El Porvenir de Cafayate – Ruta Nacional 68 Km 6, Cafayate, Salta, Argentina
Imagine a vineyard at 1,750 metres above sea level, where the air is so thin and crystal-clear that the sun almost feels within reach. In this almost lunar landscape, among the mountains surrounding Cafayate, a wine is born that challenges the laws of gravity and traditional viticulture. It is Laborum Single Vineyard Malbec, the flagship label of Bodega El Porvenir. We are in the Valles Calchaquíes, a place where the land is arid and the climate marked by dramatic temperature variation. During the day, the heat is intense, but as soon as the sun disappears behind the mountain peaks, temperatures drop sharply. This thermal contrast is the secret behind the longevity and freshness of the local wines, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly without losing acidity. Malbec has found in this part of Argentina a second home capable of giving it a personality distinctly different from the softer style of Mendoza. If Mendoza represents warmth and roundness, Salta stands for verticality and pure power. Produced from a single vineyard selected for the extraordinary quality of its fruit, production is intentionally limited because the goal is not quantity, but the pursuit of perfection in every cluster. After manual selection, the must ferments at controlled temperature before beginning a long 12-month ageing period in barriques. To add complexity to the palate, the winery uses a blend of oak types: 70% French oak contributes elegance and subtle spicy notes, while 30% American oak provides that touch of sweetness and structure that completes the wine beautifully. On the nose, ripe black fruits such as blackberries and plums mingle with floral hints of dried violet. Notes of cocoa and a spicy trail reminiscent of black pepper are also present. On the palate, the wine enters with confidence. The tannins are present but masterfully handled, resulting in a velvety texture that is never aggressive. The freshness brought by the altitude cleanses the palate and invites another sip, finishing long and with remarkable elegance. To enjoy it at its best, it is worth opening the bottle a little before serving. It pairs wonderfully with traditional Argentine asado, where the freshness of the wine perfectly balances the richness of the meat. It also works beautifully with herb-crusted lamb or intensely flavoured mature cheeses.
We are in the north of Argentina, where the sky seems closer and the land carries the scent of history and sun-kissed grapes. Here operates Bodega El Porvenir de Cafayate, a family-run winery that has managed to transform the extreme altitude of the Salta province into an opportunity to create wines of remarkable elegance. Its story officially began in 2000, although the roots of the Romero-Marcuzzi family date back to the 1970s, when grandfather Roberto Romero established the first winery in Tolombón. Today, it is his granddaughter Lucía Romero who leads the company with a vision that combines deep respect for tradition with tireless curiosity. The vineyards are located in the Calchaquí Valley, at around 1,750 metres above sea level. The scenery here is breathtaking: towering mountains, sunshine almost all year round and dramatic temperature variations that make all the difference. This contrast between daytime heat and cool nights is the secret behind the freshness of their wines: it allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing intense aromas and a solid yet never heavy structure. El Porvenir manages four estates here — or rather “fincas” — each with its own personality: from the historic El Retiro, with vines planted in the 1950s, to the spectacular Alto Los Cuises, nestled among rocky slopes where everything, from pruning to harvest, must be carried out strictly by hand.
