Italy
Syrah is Tuscany, especially in Cortona, where Achelo de La Braccesca is born, celebrating this union with Mediterranean ease. Achelo takes its name from one of the most important Etruscan works preserved in the Museum of Cortona, depicting the ancient deity Achelous, the “river god”, emphasising the deep connection between this wine and the land that hosts it. At the foot of the Cortona hills, the soils are rich in clay and skeleton, fundamental elements that ensure excellent drainage for the vines and allow the grapes to ripen to perfection. Syrah, originally from the Rhône Valley in France, has found an ideal climate here: hot, dry summers, but with significant temperature variations at night. The Achelo production process is designed to preserve the fragrance of the fruit while giving the wine structure and depth. After harvesting, the grapes are vinified in steel tanks with limited maceration. This step is managed with meticulous care to extract the rich colour and tannins of Syrah, while avoiding harsh or astringent notes. The distinctive feature of the ageing process is its partial maturation in wood, often used or second-passage barriques. This choice is fundamental, because the wood does not cover the varietal aromas, but helps to tame the youthful exuberance of the blend, making it more rounded and ready. At first glance, Achelo attracts attention with its splendid vibrant ruby red colour, often with violet hues, typical of young but concentrated Syrah. The nose is captivated by an inviting mix. There are very clear notes of fresh red fruit, such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by the classic scents of Syrah: black pepper, liquorice and, sometimes, a hint of violet. A clean and fragrant bouquet. In the mouth, the sip is harmonious and lively. The body is medium-bodied, never heavy. The tannins are present but gentle and smooth, perfectly integrated into the overall softness. The aftertaste is persistent, repeating the fruity and spicy sensations discovered on the nose. It is also a wild card at the table and pairs incredibly easily with different dishes, without trying to be the centre of attention.
When it comes to wine in Italy, the Antinori family needs no introduction: twenty-six generations dedicated to viticulture, with a clear mission: to honour tradition while always looking to the future. And if there is one estate that perfectly embodies this philosophy, it is La Braccesca. We are not in Chianti Classico, but in an equally renowned and fascinating area of Tuscany: between Montepulciano and Cortona. La Braccesca consists of two separate estates, united by a single goal: to produce wines that are an authentic and clear expression of the terroir. On one side is the part that falls within the historic Vino Nobile di Montepulciano area. Here, the undisputed star is Sangiovese, known locally as “Prugnolo Gentile”. An aristocratic grape variety with a long history, it produces red wines of great elegance, structure and ageing potential. On the other side is the Cortona area. If Montepulciano is tradition, Cortona is a winning bet. Here, La Braccesca has focused entirely on an international grape variety, Syrah, which has found its ideal habitat in these clayey soils and generally dry climate. The real magic of La Braccesca lies precisely in this harmonious coexistence between the classicism of Sangiovese and the modernity of Syrah.
