Castino is a small village in the heart of the Langhe region with less than 500 inhabitants. It is one of those remote villages nestled in the hills of the province of Cuneo, surrounded by vineyards and hazelnut groves. Here, Fontanafredda harvests the Chardonnay grapes used exclusively to produce this elegant Alta Langa DOCG Blanc de Blancs. Elegant in the glass but also in its appearance, reminiscent of the refined French wines of the Champagne region. It comes from hillside vineyards with excellent exposure, reaching 600 metres above sea level. Harvested manually in early September, the grapes are delivered to the winery in crates weighing a maximum of 20 kilos, to avoid unwanted crushing and prevent spontaneous fermentation. Careful vinification of the wines destined for the creation of the base cuvée and subsequent sparkling in the bottle with ageing on the lees for about 3 years. At that point, after disgorging, the glass will reveal a pleasantly effervescent wine with a fine and persistent perlage and a straw yellow colour. The nose is intense, citrusy and pleasantly fruity. Notes of dried fruit, bread crust and honey are also recognisable. On the palate, it is fresh, fragrant and creamy.
Founded by the first King of Italy in 1858. This inscription on the Fontanafredda website alone is enough to convey the significance of a company that can hardly be described as merely “historic”. Fontanafredda was born out of a love story. It was given by Vittorio Emanuele II to his beloved Rosa Vercellana, the famous “bella Rosina”. Beyond this ante litteram gossip, however, Fontanafredda has always been a benchmark for regional and Italian viticulture in general. In fact, this winery holds many curious records. The first vineyard in Barolo was purchased in 1866 and the first wine was produced in 1870. In 1886, Fontanafredda's Barolo wines arrived in America and in 1887 the first concrete tanks in Europe were built. Finally, the production of the first classic method sparkling wine, the precursor of Alta Langa DOCG, dates back to 1959. The last milestone in the glorious history of this winery, after its acquisition by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, was in 2018. Since then, the company has been producing certified organic wines. Today, the company, which exports to over 60 countries worldwide, has 120 hectares of vineyards. Its cellars hold over 2.5 million bottles of Barolo waiting to be released onto the market. Long live Fontanafredda!
