Durin. Via Roma, 202, 17037 Ortovero (SV), Italy
The one proposed here by the Durin winery is a real 'gem'. Specifically, it is a DOC Ormeasco di Pornassio wine, produced from the indigenous variety of the same name. Omeasco, in fact, is a very close relative of Dolcetto, from which it differs due to its red stalk, smaller bunch and thicker skin, Ormeasco gives wines characterised by sweeter tannins and a longer duration than those obtained from its Piedmontese cousin. The name of this wine is Sciac-trà, which in Ligurian dialect literally means 'squeeze and pull'. In this case, the vine is vinified partially in white, until a delicate pink colour is achieved, as in this case. The grapes are harvested in the estate's vineyards in Ranzo, Armo and Ligassorio, where the vines are trained partly in spurred cordon and partly in bush-training. In the glass, Sciac-trà has a beautiful coral pink colour. The nose is vinous and delicate, with hints of berries and cherries. Pleasant and characteristic, in the mouth it is pleasantly dry, fresh and harmonious. Soft and light at the same time, Ormeasco Ccia-trà is a fresh, ready-to-drink wine that goes well with typical local dishes, such as trenette al pesto. It is also excellent with ravioli di magro, grilled white meats and fish cooked in salt.
Durin is a small family-run farm with a long history. It is located in Ortovero, in the province of Savona and was founded in 1978 by Antonio Basso, the third generation of winegrowers in his family. The company's first vineyards date back to the 1920s and today extend over 17 hectares, mostly terraced, in the Arroscia Valley. The main native varieties of western Liguria are grown here, thanks to a very special microclimate, influenced by the hills and the sea just 7 kilometres away. In the cellar, tradition and innovation happily coexist. So alongside the traditional Ligurian wines there are some very special and interesting ones.
