DIEGO PRESSENDA S.S.A. Località Sant'Anna 98 - 12065 Monforte d'Alba (CN)
Among the vineyards of Monforte d'Alba, Diego Pressenda embraced a fascinating challenge, bringing the king of northern grape varieties into the beating heart of the Langhe. Here Riesling sheds its classic Alpine austerity and takes on a distinctly Piedmontese character. Monforte d'Alba is a historic village renowned worldwide for the power and longevity of its Barolo wines. Yet the Langhe is also remarkably versatile. The marl and limestone soils of these hills, combined with constant ventilation, have proven ideal for white grape varieties as well. Producing a Riesling in this area means offering wine lovers something that breaks away from traditional expectations. The strength of this Al Bric lies in its ability to absorb the mineral complexity of the Langhe soils and translate it into a substantial structure that stands proudly alongside the region’s celebrated red wines. The grapes undergo direct pressing as soon as they arrive at the winery. Alcoholic fermentation takes place slowly in stainless steel tanks at strictly controlled temperatures. Once fermentation is complete, the wine rests for several months on its lees in stainless steel, and this ageing process is the true secret behind its enveloping texture. In the glass it displays a bright straw-yellow colour. On the nose, distinct notes of lemon zest and mango emerge immediately, followed by a delicate bouquet of white flowers. On the palate it impresses with a perfect duality. The sip is full, rich and elegant, much like the great reds of the Langhe. Yet it finishes with a trail of mineral and savoury freshness that cleanses the palate and invites another sip. Its ageing potential is remarkable for a white wine. The natural acidity of Riesling and the structure provided by the marl soils will allow the wine to evolve beautifully over time, developing fascinating hydrocarbon notes. At the table it pairs wonderfully with baked sea bass with aromatic herbs or traditional Piedmontese tajarin pasta with butter and sage. It is also surprisingly good with a selection of fresh goat’s cheeses.
The Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are famous throughout the world for their landscapes lined with endless vineyards and for their great age-worthy red wines. To truly understand the most authentic and artisanal soul of this territory, however, one must leave the main roads and climb towards Monforte d’Alba, specifically to the hamlet of Perno. This is where the heart of the Diego Pressenda estate beats. Everything began in the mid-1970s, when Diego Pressenda and his wife Silvia, driven by a profound love for their land, decided to invest their future among these hills. It was a courageous choice, built on hard manual work and old-fashioned dedication. Over the years, that initial dream grew into a successful family-run estate. Today the next generation has joined the business: Francesca, Beatrice and Alessandro work alongside their parents, bringing fresh and dynamic energy. In this small wine “atelier”, every bottle is the result of a pact of honour between man and nature. Diego Pressenda’s philosophy is based on deep respect for the land and sustainable vineyard management.
