Lagrein Gries Riserva "Select" Alto Adige DOC 2021

This interesting pure Lagrein, Alto Adige Gries Riserva DOC, belongs to the Select line. Lagrein, after all, as an indigenous variety of the Alpine arc, is certainly one of the jewels in the crown of South Tyrolean viticulture. Lagrein loves the cool air, but does not disdain the mild climate of the Bolzano basin, where it can take root in deep, loose soil. Here the conditions are perfect for bringing the grapes to full maturity. Then it is only up to the good local vintners, such as Hans Rottensteiner, to transform them into a full, dark wine. In this case, the grapes used come from three vineyards in the centre of the hamlet of Gries, with vines over 30 years old. After fermentation in cement, the wine matures in barriques for 12 months, followed by a further 12 months in oak barrels. This intriguing Lagrein presents itself in the glass with a beautiful deep colour, with fantastic notes of violet, cherry, chocolate, liquorice, berries and, with time, also tobacco. In the mouth it reveals a fruity and velvety character, with sweet tannins made soft by a wise use of barriques. Excellent with game, in general this red wine should be served with meat dishes with a pleasantly spicy flavour. Excellent, for example, with the classic beef goulash.
