Italy
The alluvial soils covering the Gries district of Bolzano have always been the ideal location for growing Lagrein. This is evidenced by written sources dating back as far as 1379. A fine example of this is the red wine produced by Cantina di Terlano, made from grapes harvested by hand and quickly taken to the winery to begin the careful vinification process. After alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is transferred to wooden barrels for the delicate finishing stages. It remains here for at least a year, during which time it also undergoes malolactic fermentation. Part of the wine rests in large wooden barrels and part in barriques, about a third of which are new. Ruby red with garnet reflections and a delicate violet hue, this Gries has a particularly intriguing bouquet, with earthy and mineral notes that blend well with fruity aromas, especially black cherry, plum jam and bitter chocolate. These fruity and spicy notes are repeated on the palate, creating a full-bodied, articulate and complex wine.
Founded in 1893, the Terlano Winery is one of the most advanced cooperatives of producers in the whole of South Tyrol. Its 143 current members cultivate 190 hectares of vineyards, producing a total of around one and a half million bottles per year, divided into two lines, to which are added some gems of great oenological value. Only DOC wines, particularly whites, are aged in the modern winery, thanks above all to the new area built in 2009, where the wines have all the space they need to grow and develop to their full potential. The Terlano Winery also deserves a special mention from an architectural point of view. On the outside, part of the building has been covered with red porphyry, the typical rock of the area, while the roof of the winery has been greened and covered with vines, thus blending in with the surrounding cultivated landscape. The winery's wine archive is unique in Italy, with 100,000 bottles from 1955 to the present day. However, the cellar also houses some ancient treasures: a few bottles dating back to the year it was founded!
