The 2019 Langhe Chardonnay G.D. is a medium-rich white wine that offers surprising latitude and versatility. I say that because you can envisage pairing a wine like this with a wide assortment of foods, ranging from delicate sashimi to a more robust roasted chicken dish. Nectarine, stone fruit and cantaloupe melon are front and center, but there are pretty notes of spice and toasted almond as well. Fresh acidity caps it all off. Production is 4,000 bottles.

  • James Suckling 91

Oddly, this pale white is in an orange-tinged bottle. It has pretty aromas of apricots, chamomile, papayas, mangoes, hazelnuts and salted butter. Full-bodied with a creamy, round and nutty palate. Lengthy, with lingering praline and hazelnut notes. Drink now.

    "GD" Chardonnay Langhe DOC 2020
  • Dedicated to Giacomo Damilano, GD, the founder of the winery, who had already sensed the vocation and potential of the family vineyards back in the 1920s. In this case, the historic Langhe winery is not confronted with its main grape variety, Nebbiolo, but with the most classic of white grape varieties, Chardonnay. It is, in fact, a wine that was born as a challenge, with the conviction that the Langhe can give unexpected results, even in white. Thus were born a few thousand bottles of a wine capable of living up to the great reds of the area. The result is here to be judged. In the glass it has a magnificent intense straw yellow colour with golden reflections. The nose reveals an elegant bouquet, with intense hints of white peach, citrus and broom, perfectly blended with toasted notes and peanut butter. The palate reveals a pleasantly soft and enveloping wine, with excellent freshness and flavour, and a long finish and slight hints of spice. A "Limited edition" white that requires a high level of pairing. Excellent with fish first courses, in white, this Chardonnay has no difficulty in holding its own even with delicate and savoury white meats. Excellent, to remain in the territory, the pairing with classic vitello tonnato.

Damilano is one of Barolo's historic wineries with ancient traditions. Over a hundred years old, even. In fact, the Damilano family's activity dates back to 1890, when Giuseppe Borgogno, great-grandfather of the current owners, began cultivating and vinifying the grapes he owned in the commune of Barolo. However, it was with the next generation, with Giacomo Damilano, the founder's son-in-law, that the winery took on its current name. Since 1997, his grandsons have been at the helm of the fine Langa winery. Guido, Mario and Paolo Damilano carry on the work of their ancestors with commitment, making the most of the Langhe's main grape variety, Nebbiolo, and the most suitable vineyards. But the secret of the high quality of Damilano wines is to be found in the vineyards, located in the elective areas for the production of Nebbiolo grapes, such as the Cannubi, Liste, Brunate and Cerequio Cru.
