Imbottigliato all'origine da Fondazione Villa Russiz Via Russiz, 4/6, 34070 Capriva del Friuli (GO)
This wine is considered one of the founding fathers of Sauvignon in Italy. Its story begins over a century ago, when Count Theodor de La Tour brought the first clones of international grape varieties from France, recognising that the hills of Collio had a potential comparable to that of the most prestigious regions beyond the Alps. We are in Capriva del Friuli, where the Villa Russiz estate overlooks a landscape of gentle slopes and unique microclimates. Here the land is generous yet demanding, composed of the typical “ponca”, a mix of marl and sandstone that gives white wines a structure and minerality impossible to replicate elsewhere. The Collio DOC is synonymous with excellence in white wines, and Sauvignon de la Tour represents its flagship. It comes from a specific cru, where the vineyards benefit from optimal exposure, allowing slow and steady ripening. Harvesting is done by hand and during the coolest hours to preserve the aromatic profile of the fruit. In the cellar, most of the must ferments in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature to retain freshness, while a small portion ferments in oak barriques. The wine then rests on its lees for at least eight to nine months, a crucial step that gives it the complexity and longevity that have made it legendary. In the glass, it stands out with an intense straw yellow colour, crossed by vivid golden reflections. The bouquet is an elegant mosaic: beyond the classic tomato leaf note, there are hints of elderflower, pink grapefruit, white peach and a mineral nuance reminiscent of flint. On the palate, it is a wine of great impact. The entry is soft and enveloping, almost velvety, but is immediately balanced by citrus acidity and deep savouriness that extends the finish remarkably. At the table, it is perfect with risottos with wild herbs or with white asparagus, typical of the region. Also excellent with citrus amberjack tartare or soft goat cheeses.
Villa Russiz, heart and soul of Collio Goriziano. We are in Capriva del Friuli, in a territory where the hills seem designed to welcome the vine. Here Villa Russiz tells an extraordinary story spanning over 150 years. It all began in 1868, thanks to an encounter that seems straight out of a novel: that between the French nobleman Theodore de La Tour and the Austrian Elvine Ritter von Zahony. It was Theodore, with his agronomic expertise and a vision well ahead of its time, who realised the enormous potential of these hills. He was also the one who introduced French grape varieties that are now considered “at home” in Collio, revolutionising local viticulture. After her husband’s death, the countess decided to turn the estate into a foundation to help disadvantaged children, creating an institution that is still active today and supported by wine sales. Buying a bottle of Villa Russiz is therefore not just a pleasure for the palate, but a gesture that concretely supports a humanitarian mission. In the vineyard, work is carried out with deep respect for the environment, while in the cellar the focus is on purity. No artifice, only elegance. The winery’s white wines are renowned for their longevity and structure: from Sauvignon to Friulano, through Pinot Bianco, each sip tells the story of the freshness of the Friulian hills.
