Two hands Wines, 273 Neldner Road- Marananga, Barossa Valley, South Australia, 5355
This wine can be described with a simple acronym ‘GSM’, which does not refer to the mobile phone of the 1990s but to the three varieties used in its production: Grenache, Mourvèdre and Shiraz. Brave Faces by Two Hands, in fact, pays tribute to the perseverance and dedication of the Barossa Valley winegrowers who, despite the difficulties of past years, have continued to cultivate old vines of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley, located in South Australia, is one of the country's most famous and oldest wine regions. Its climate is hot and dry, tempered only by the coolness of the surrounding hills. The soils vary from sandy to loamy, with areas rich in limestone and iron, characteristics that give the wines a complex structure and intense flavour profile. The region's ancient vineyards, some of which are over a hundred years old, produce grapes of exceptional quality, with low yields but great complexity. The blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Shiraz is a great classic. The three grape varieties complement each other to create a harmonious and rich wine. The Grenache brings lively red fruit notes and a pleasant sweetness. The Mourvèdre adds structure and depth, with earthy and spicy notes, while the Shiraz contributes body and intensity, offering tones of black fruit and pepper. The three varieties are vinified separately to maintain the purity and integrity of each variety. After destemming and crushing, the Shiraz undergoes frequent pumping over to extract maximum colour and flavour, while the Grenache and Mourvèdre undergo cold maceration. The Grenache portion also undergoes 20% fermentation without being destemmed, hence whole clusters, giving the wine greater complexity. After fermentation, the wine matures for six months in new and old French oak barrels, some of which maintain prolonged contact with the lees to further enrich the aromatic profile. Lively red, the nose is rich and complex, with aromas of cloves, black pepper, black raspberries and spices, enriched by floral notes. In the mouth it is juicy and enveloping, with fine, silky tannins that caress the palate. The soft acidity perfectly balances the fruity concentration, while the tannins offer a pleasant sensation that dries the palate, preparing it for food. The finish is long and persistent, with a perfect balance between freshness and structure. Try it with white meats and fatty fish, such as tuna or salmon, or with spicy and smoked dishes.
Today we are in the heart of Australia, where the French Syrah is better known as Shiraz. Here we find Two Hands, a winery that has been able to gain a prominent place on the international wine scene in relatively few years, thanks to the quality of its wines. Founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, the winery was born with a clear objective: to demonstrate to the world the extraordinary potential of Australian Shiraz, cultivated in the continent's best terroirs. The company's philosophy is simple: terroir, i.e. the combination of geological, climatic and environmental characteristics of an area, is the fundamental element in bringing out the best qualities of the grape variety. For this reason, the company has vineyards in six different regions of Australia, each of which offers unique and unrepeatable conditions for growing grapes. These include the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and the Clare Valley, areas renowned for producing wines of the highest quality. Each plot is carefully tended by the Two Hands winegrowing teams, who work tirelessly to maximise the potential of each individual plot. This meticulous approach allows them to express all the nuances of the grape variety, offering wines that are the perfect synthesis of their terroir.
