Peter Lehmann Wines – Para Road, Tanunda SA 5352, Barossa Valley, Australia
An Australian red, a Shiraz. Peter Lehmann is not just its producer but the man who saved the Barossa Valley in the 1970s. When large companies stopped buying grapes from small growers, he went into debt to honour contracts sealed with a handshake. He founded his winery precisely to protect that human and agricultural heritage, creating an unbreakable bond with local families. The Barossa Valley terroir is a mosaic of rolling hills and ancient soils, ranging from yellow clay to alluvial sediments. Here, hot and dry summers allow Shiraz to reach perfect ripeness, while cool night ocean breezes preserve vibrant freshness. This region is home to some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, which even survived phylloxera. Muscular and spicy in character. To preserve this intensity, the grapes are harvested at night when the air is cool. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by a crucial step: 15 months ageing in American oak barrels. Around 25% of the oak is new, adding sweet notes without overpowering the fruit. Deep ruby red with violet reflections, the nose bursts with dark cherry and ripe blackberry, accompanied by hints of black pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is full and enveloping. The tannins are velvety and well polished, with a long finish recalling mocha and toasted spices. Thanks to its powerful structure and generous alcohol content, it has excellent ageing potential. It can easily rest in the cellar for over 10 years. Over time, fresh fruit notes will give way to tertiary aromas of leather and tobacco, becoming even more harmonious.
Peter Lehmann embodies the soul of the Barossa Valley. This is not just a winery but a true legend of viticulture. The story of Peter Lehmann Wines begins in 1979, during a period of deep crisis for Barossa growers. Due to a surplus of grapes, large wine companies chose not to honour their purchase contracts, leaving hundreds of families with crops rotting on the vines. Peter, who at the time worked as a director in one of these major companies, refused to accept this betrayal. He resigned and, with a handshake and a bold loan, decided to buy the grapes himself and vinify them independently. Thus, “Masterson Barossa Vineyards” was born, later renamed after him. This act earned him the nickname “Baron of Barossa” and created an unbreakable bond with local growers, a relationship of trust that continues to this day across generations. Today, the company does not own vast estates but collaborates with over 140 independent growers. This approach allows access to an extraordinary variety of microclimates and soils, ensuring remarkable consistency in quality. Every sip is a tribute to the man who, rather than betray his fellow growers, ended up creating a legend.
