    Sforzato di Valtellina "San Domenico" DOCG 2018
  • Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG. Some people describe it - with a few turns of phrase - as simply a 'sublime wine'. A great Valtellina speciality, it is the ultimate expression of the typical flavours of this borderland. No expense is spared in producing it. In fact, the grapes are carefully selected and harvested in crates, then stored to dry in fruit lofts throughout the autumn period. During this long period, a noticeable concentration of sugars and aromas takes place. Then, in mid-December, after about two months, the grapes are pressed. Fermentation takes place very slowly, due to both the low cellar temperatures and the high sugar concentration. The resulting wine is very full-bodied, rich in extracts and anthocyanins, with an abundance of soft, round tannins. Deep red, the bouquet of this San Domenico reveals fascinating notes of overripe fruit and toasted almonds. In the mouth, however, there is a pleasant aroma of sultanas. A precious wine, this red wine from Valtellina requires pairings of a certain weight. Excellent with 'very' tasty red meats, it also goes well with game and mature cheeses.

    A historic family business, Triacca is based in Campascio, Valposchiavo, Switzerland. The vineyards, and 'the' cellars, however, are located in Italy. In particular La Gatta in Valtellina, La Madonnina in Chianti Classico, Santavenere in Montepulciano. Winemakers since 1897, Triacca wines regularly score high marks in the most renowned wine guides. Today, the company is managed by brothers Giovanni and Luca, exponents of the fourth generation. Luca is oenologist and wine production manager. Giovanni runs the winery. With them is Uncle Rino, the 'old guard', who still welcomes visitors to La Gatta with his well-known friendliness and passion.
