Very aromatic and lively on the nose with currants, fresh herbs, white pepper and cherry blossoms. Full-bodied with a vertical, multilayered structure and ultra fine tannins. Velvety texture. Extremely long and focused. Complex and succulent. This is the smallest production of Solaia ever. Great length. This is a beautifully complex red that’s open now, but needs another three to four years to show even more of its excellence.
Tenuta Tignanello is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, between the Greve and Pesa valleys. A total of 319 hectares of land, of which approximately 130 hectares are planted with vines. Composed mainly of the indigenous Sangiovese grape and non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, there are two "legendary" vineyards on the property. We are obviously talking about the Tignanello and Solaia vineyards. This is where the grapes used to make the two absolute masterpieces of the Antinori house come from. Harvested rigorously by hand, the best bunches are first destemmed and then the individual grapes are checked by hand at the sorting table before being sent to the vinification phase in 60 hectolitre truncated cone tanks. During fermentation and maceration, great care is taken to maintain the correct balance between the fruit and the quality of the tannins so as to express the sweetness, fragrance, identity and character of the original grapes to the full. Then, after racking, malolactic fermentation is carried out in barriques to enhance the complexity and pleasantness of the wine. Finally, only new French oak barrels are used for ageing, in which the wine rests serenely for about 18 months. Solaia 2017 has an intense and deep ruby red colour. The nose is striking for its intense notes of ripe dark fruit, with sensations of blackberry and blackcurrant alternating with balsamic hints of fresh mint and myrtle; refined spicy aromas of white pepper and toasted cinnamon and cocoa powder complete the bouquet. On the palate it is rich and enveloping; the soft, velvety and vibrant tannins give length to the finish and persistence in the aftertaste, where the toasted notes perceived on the nose return.
It can be said that the Antinori family has represented Italian wine in the world for practically as long as it has existed. And it would not even be an exaggeration, given that the Antinori have dedicated themselves to the vineyard and the cellar for more than six hundred years. Ever since, in 1385, Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri. Since then, 26 generations of the family have succeeded one another at the helm of the group which today is one of the best known and most appreciated on a global level. Today the company is headed by Marquis Piero Antinori, with the support of his three daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia, all of whom are personally involved in the company's activities. To the family's historic Tuscan and Umbrian estates, several others have been added over time. Everywhere the aim of the Antinori family is to make the most of the particular terroir, to produce fascinating and in some way memorable wines. Among the "masterpieces" signed by Antinori we cannot forget the great Supertuscan of the family, Solaia and Tignanello, mythical bottles that fans all over the world eagerly await, vintage after vintage. Or the Chianti Classico wines that represent a point of reference for all wine lovers.
