The excellence of Sangiovese undoubtedly comes from the heart of Chianti Classico, from Radda in Chianti. Here, in fact, lies the ‘Il Solatìo’ vineyard, a plot of just 0.9 hectares perfectly exposed to the south-east, from which this Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from Castello di Albola takes its name. Located between 550 and 580 metres above sea level, this steep slope is characterised by poor, rocky soils. But let's proceed in order. Il Solatìo is a Chianti Classico DOCG ‘Gran Selezione’, the most prestigious category of the appellation, reserved for wines produced from selected vineyards and aged for a minimum of 30 months. Vinification involves fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with maceration on the skins for 3-4 weeks to promote the extraction of colour and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 10-12 months in 36-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels and in new and second-use tonneaux. This is followed by a further 6 months of ageing in Slavonian oak barrels and 18 months in bottle, for a total of over 30 months before release. In the glass, Il Solatìo has an intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections. The nose reveals complex aromas of wild berries, tobacco and liquorice. On the palate, it is enveloping and elegant, with fine acidity and a long, persistent finish. Thanks to its structure and beautiful complexity, Il Solatìo has an ageing potential of 20-25 years. When uncorking it, remember to pair it with flavourful traditional dishes, such as pasta with sauce, red meat, roasts, game and medium-aged cheeses. However, a grilled steak is always the best choice!
Nestled in the hills of Chianti Classico, Castello di Albola is a wine gem that combines history, elegance and Tuscan authenticity. The estate belongs to the Zonin family and stands on an ancient medieval village, surrounded by vineyards that extend up to 600 metres above sea level. This is where wines of great finesse are produced, such as Chianti Classico and Supertuscan Acciaiolo, the result of a unique terroir and environmentally friendly viticulture. Tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously in every bottle, a sincere expression of the most authentic Tuscany. A winery to discover, among art, nature and great wines.
