    CHARACTERISTICS
    • TypeVino spumante rosé brut
    • Location Piedmont
    • Grapes Chardonnay 30%, Pinot Nero 70%
    • Sensations Contessa Rosa represents the true spirit of Fontanafredda: dedicated to Countess Rosa Vercellana, known as "Bela Rusin", this sparkling wine, made from grapes grown at high altitudes, expresses the combination of aromatic freshness and complexity typical of great wines such as Barolo. To create this cuvée, a new method was developed, using a liqueur d'éxpédition containing a few drops of Barolo DOC 1967. The result is a sparkling wine with a soft pink colour with onion skin reflections. The bouquet is reminiscent of orange blossom, pomegranate fruit, chinotto and black plum, ending with ginger, nutmeg, lavender, basil and a background of custard. In the mouth, the bubble is fine and persistent and the acidity is in balance with the sweet note. A mineral and savoury sensation finishes with a citrus aftertaste.
    • Vinification Vinification: Part of the pinot noir grapes are pressed and left in contact with the skins in temperature-controlled tanks at 10 °C for 12-24 hours. After maceration, regular soft pressing takes place. The must undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature (18-20 °C) and at the end the wine is kept in contact with the fine lees until spring. At this point, the cuvée is made by combining the wines from the two fermentations. In May, the wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle, followed by a 48-month maturation process on the lees in the cool, dark and protected environment of the cellars, in accordance with the strictest rules of the Metodo Classico sparkling wine.

    • Fontanafredda

"Contessa Rosa" Alta Langa DOCG Rosé 2017
    • Contessa Rosa Brut Rosé represents the true spirit of Fontanafredda. Dedicated to Countess Rosa Vercellana, known as the "Bela Rusin", this sparkling wine, made from grapes grown at high altitudes, expresses the combination of aromatic freshness and complexity typical of great wines such as Barolo. Its base cuvée is composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from the Langa of Alba and Asti. Part of the Pinot Noir grapes are pressed and left in contact with the skins in temperature-controlled tanks for one or two days and, at the end of maceration, a soft pressing is carried out. This produces a rosé must which, together with the white must, is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a low temperature and, at the end of this phase, the wine obtained is left in contact with its fine lees until the following spring. At this point, the cuvée is made by blending the wines from the two fermentations. The second fermentation, in the bottle, continues with no less than 48 months of maturation on the lees. The real peculiarity of this classic method, however, lies in the unique recipe of its "liqueur d'éxpédition" which contains, among other ingredients, a few drops of Barolo DOC 1967. Pale pink in colour with onion skin highlights, the nose has aromas reminiscent of orange blossom, pomegranate, chinotto and black plum, ending with ginger, nutmeg, lavender, basil and a background of custard. On the palate, however, one discovers a fine and persistent bubble, but above all a perfect balance between all the components of the wine. Excellent as an aperitif, thanks to its personality, it can accompany an entire meal with class.

Founded by the first King of Italy in 1858. This inscription on the Fontanafredda website is enough to give a sense of a company that to define as "historic" is almost reductive. Fontanafredda was born out of a love story. It was in fact a gift from Vittorio Emanuele II to his beloved Rosa Vercellana, the famous "bella Rosina". Beyond this ante litteram gossip, however, Fontanafredda has always been a point of reference for regional and Italian viticulture in general. In fact, many curious records belong to this winery. The first vineyard in Barolo was purchased in 1866, and the first vinification took place in 1870. In 1886, Fontanafredda's Barolo wines reached America, and in 1887, the first cement tanks in Europe were built. Finally, 1959 saw the production of the first classic method sparkling wine, the forerunner of Alta Langa DOCG. The last step in the glorious history of this winery, after its acquisition by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, is in 2018. Since that year, the company has been producing certified organic wines. Today, Fontanafredda, which exports to over 60 countries around the world, can count on a complex of 120 hectares of vineyards. And in its cellars there are over 2.5 million bottles of Barolo waiting to be put on the market. Long live... Fontanafredda!
