Tons of wet-stone minerality and wild-herb character, plus black and white currants, make this a very complex sauvignon blanc. Somehow, it manages to be simultaneously highly structured and lively in an uncomplicated way. Very long, totally focused and fresh finish. Drink or hold.
With the same elegance as the quartz inserts that make Terlano's volcanic porphyry glow, our Sauvignon selection proves that it is worthy of its name. Rudi Kofler, the talented winemaker at Cantina di Terlano, does not mince his words when describing his Quartz, one of the winery's most representative wines. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes for this selection are harvested by hand. This is followed by a gentle whole cluster crushing and a slow temperature-controlled fermentation. Then, in order to give complexity to the final wine, there is a long ageing phase lasting about 9 months on its fine lees, partly in large wooden barrels and partly in stainless steel drums. The final blending of the two batches takes place about three months before bottling. Sparkling greenish yellow, the nose of this Sauvignon reveals an exotic and captivating bouquet, with fruity notes of mango, papaya, lime and pink grapefruit, but also aromas of herbs such as lemongrass, lemon balm, mint and green tea. Hints of gooseberry and mineral veins reminiscent of flint are also evident. In the mouth, finally, it surprises with its fine balance of fruity and delicately mineral aromas. A long persistence prolongs the pleasure of each sip for several minutes.
Founded in 1893, the Cantina di Terlano is one of the most avant-garde wine cooperatives in the whole of Alto Adige. Its 143 current members cultivate 190 hectares of vineyards, producing a total annual output of around one and a half million bottles, divided into two lines, plus a few rarities of great oenological value. In the modern wine cellar, only DOC wines are produced, especially white wines, thanks to the new area created in 2009, where the wines have all the space they need to grow and develop to the full. From an architectural point of view, the Terlan Winery also deserves special mention. On the outside, part of the building has been covered with red porphyry, the typical rock of the area, while the roof of the winery has been greened and covered with vines, thus blending into the surrounding cultivated landscape. The wine archive of the cellar is unique in Italy with its 100,000 bottles from the 1955 vintage to the present day. However, the cellar also holds some ancient treasures: some bottles dating back to the year of its foundation!
