Campo dei Severi, a Lazio IGT Rosso proposed here by Cantina Le Macchie, comes from an intriguing blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and a small part of Montepulciano. A red wine described by its creators as majestic, a treasure chest containing typical treasures of these three grape varieties. The three grape varieties are harvested and vinified separately, thus expressing all their personality. They are blended only later to undergo a slight refinement in tonneaux, which completes the olfactory picture. Ruby red with garnet highlights, this wine reveals an incredibly broad and fresh bouquet. In the mouth, then, it confirms its great drinkability, thanks to the ripe fruit and pleasant minerality. We are in the Castel Franco area, in the heart of Lazio, one of the many corners of Italy with a truly excellent habitat for the cultivation of vines and olive trees. Here Cantina Le Macchie, owned by the Di Carlo family, can today count on vineyards that extend over the hills between the Rieti basin and Mount Terminillo. The altitude is between 610 and 1075 metres above sea level, with good exposures towards the south occupied by the later-ripening vines, and others towards the south-west where the more precocious varieties are found. The soil, rich in minerals, favours the growth and development of high quality grapes. It produces wines characterised by a fine freshness and flavour. In view of the altitude of the vineyards, their slope and the difficulty of working them, the winery is a member of Cervim, the certification body for Eroica viticulture.
