Can a Vermentino from Lazio be more intriguing than its Tuscan or Sardinian cousin? Judge for yourself. After tasting this white wine with its strong character. The secret lies in its soul, shaped by a unique territory: not only earth and sand, but also a constant sea breeze that, coming from a few kilometres away, shapes an unmistakable character and makes it fresh and savoury, almost salty. But let's proceed in order. We are north of Rome, in the medieval village of Torre in Pietra. Here, viticulture has roots dating back to the 16th century, even though Vermentino is an “alien” grape variety. It has been cultivated at Castello di Torre in Pietra since 1968, to the point that it is now an integral part of an ecosystem where man, history and nature are inextricably linked. The name “Arenaro” is a tribute to the sandy soil and marine debris that characterise the terrain of these vineyards, giving the wine a minerality that can be tasted with every sip. Vermentino IGT, Arenaro is a wine that does not seek to overdo it, but focuses on simple and direct elegance. The grapes, harvested by hand at different times to balance aroma and acidity, are vinified in reduction, a process that preserves the most delicate varietal aromas. The wine then rests in steel for about nine months, in contact with the noble lees, to acquire complexity and structure without losing its immediacy. Bright straw yellow in colour, the nose reveals aromas reminiscent of the Mediterranean scrub: broom, thyme and sage. This is followed by a pleasant citrus sensation. On the palate, it is fresh and lively, with an almost salty flavour and a mineral note reminiscent of the sea. The finish is clean, with an aftertaste that invites another sip. A “dangerously drinkable” wine. Arenaro is the natural ally for all seafood cuisine.
The history of the Castello di Torre in Pietra winery dates back to the 16th century, when the estate belonged to the Peretti family of Pope Sixtus V. The historic cellar is carved out of tuff, a true masterpiece of natural engineering and the ideal place for wine production and storage. A cool, stable and perfectly insulated environment, where wine has been able to evolve for centuries, preserving the secrets of a precious art. The recent history of the company began in 1926, with its acquisition by Senator Luigi Albertini, former editor of Corriere della Sera. Forced to leave his post due to conflicts with fascism, Albertini devoted his energies to transforming the estate into a model farm. It was he, together with his heirs, who gave new impetus to the wine business, expanding the winery and planting new vineyards. The current owners are the children and grandchildren of his heirs. As far as production philosophy is concerned, the company has been applying the principles of organic farming since the early 2000s and is now officially certified. The aim is to produce a wine that is the most authentic and genuine expression of the territory, without resorting to pesticides, herbicides or chemical additives, and limiting the use of sulphur dioxide to a minimum.
