Barbaresco DOCG 2018 - Bersano

The other side of Paradise (of wine lovers). We are in Piedmont, in the Langa, to the right of the Tanaro river. Here on the hills of Barbaresco, from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, comes the other great red wine of the region. If Barolo is known as the wine of kings, Barbaresco has always been considered more delicate and somewhat feminine (if this distinction still makes sense). What is certain, however, is that this great red wine acquires a harmonious, velvety and elegant taste with ageing in wood. Specifically, Bersano, after vinification in steel, matures this wine for at least 18 months in large oak barrels, giving it time to smooth out its edges and acquire a pleasing complexity. In the glass, it has a beautiful intense garnet red colour. The nose is characterised by notes of morello cherry, currants, cocoa and violets. All accompanied by a characteristic reminiscence of tar, typical for the important reds of the region. In the mouth, it is rich and persistent, with soft tannins and hints of leather, liquorice and pepper. Over everything, however, returns the classic note of wilted violets and ripe plums that experts like so much. On the table it accompanies game, red meat and in general elaborate main courses or cheeses with a strong flavour.

More than a century has passed since the foundation of the Bersano company. The precise date is 1907, as proudly recalled on the home page of the company website. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the Barbera d'Asti district. The real turning point, however, came only a few years later, in 1935, when Arturo Bersano, a rare man in terms of intelligence and culture, a lawyer by family pride and a vine grower by passion, took control of the Cantina, which until then had been a family-run business and sold its wines only regionally. His work was inspired by the motto 'if you want to drink well, buy a vineyard'. A philosophy that, like a true pioneer, he would follow for the rest of his life. So over time, Bersano and, after him, the Massimelli and Soave families, owners of the Casa Vinicola, consolidated an impressive farmstead. Here, without forgetting the strength of tradition, quality grapes are still produced from which typical wines of the region are made. Particular attention has always been paid to the wood for ageing, the company's true asset. Cantine Bersano, in fact, keep large oak casks and tonneaux where, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity, the wines mature slowly for years. Today Bersano is considered one of the most important wineries in Piedmont.
