    • BERSANO S.r.l. - Nizza Monferrato

"La Pomona" Barbera Monferrato DOC Frizzante 2023
    • Let us start with the name. Pomona, or rather 'Pomona Italiana', is a valuable descriptive work in pictures and text that contains a section dedicated to the most famous Italian native grape varieties. A sort of 'Ante litteram' encyclopaedia, written by Giorgio Gallesio between 1817 and 1839. A valuable work of which only about 170 copies were made, dedicated to sovereigns or true connoisseurs who could afford this tome. Bersano owns a copy that is exhibited, along with many other heirlooms, in the company museum in Nizza Monferrato. But Pomona, in this case, is above all the name chosen by the winery to indicate this Barbera del Monferrato DOC sparkling wine, vinified in steel, followed by a second fermentation for the so-called presa di spuma. Like a sparkling wine, therefore, but with a lower pressure inside the bottle. A fine wine of tradition, fresh, ample and smooth, with hints of almond and a pleasant violet finish. It is the right wine to serve to friends when the mid-afternoon urge to have a gourmand snack strikes. A slice of salami, a piece of cheese, for example, are ideal pairings. Excellent, however, also with classic meat ravioli prepared in broth.

More than a century has passed since the foundation of the Bersano company. The precise date is 1907, as proudly recalled on the home page of the company website. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the Barbera d'Asti district. The real turning point, however, came only a few years later, in 1935, when Arturo Bersano, a rare man in terms of intelligence and culture, a lawyer by family pride and a vine grower by passion, took control of the Cantina, which until then had been a family-run business and sold its wines only regionally. His work was inspired by the motto 'if you want to drink well, buy a vineyard'. A philosophy that, like a true pioneer, he would follow for the rest of his life. So over time, Bersano and, after him, the Massimelli and Soave families, owners of the Casa Vinicola, consolidated an impressive farmstead. Here, without forgetting the strength of tradition, quality grapes are still produced from which typical wines of the region are made. Particular attention has always been paid to the wood for ageing, the company's true asset. Cantine Bersano, in fact, keep large oak casks and tonneaux where, thanks to the constant temperature and humidity, the wines mature slowly for years. Today Bersano is considered one of the most important wineries in Piedmont.
