"Pounamu" Special Selection Pinot Noir 2021
  • This Pounamu, Vinultra's Special Selection, is made from a particular clone of Pinot Noir, called Dijon. Vineyards in Southern's Valley, in Marlborough, the northern part of New Zealand's South Island. A magical place, where a naturally cool climate allows the grapes to ripen perfectly, resulting in wines of extraordinary finesse. Mythical wines that are appreciated and awarded all over the world. After all, New Zealand is practically a hallmark. In this case, vinification takes place in stainless steel, while the wine is matured in small French oak barrels, where it rests for no less than a year. The colour is typical, a shallow ruby red, with aromas reminiscent of small red fruits and cherries, with a pleasant vegetal touch to support them. In the mouth it is fresh and well balanced. A pleasant, well-made wine that has no difficulty in finding the right combination. Excellent, for example, with roasts, including game, or mushroom dishes.

Vinultra is located in Marlborough, in one of New Zealand's richest, best-loved and world-renowned wine regions. The grapes grown are predominantly Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the area's grape varieties of choice, as well as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. The wines come from individual vineyards on river terraces, each with its own particular soil composition. Only French oak barriques are used for ageing, with a small percentage of new wood. And, where possible, indigenous yeasts are used for all wines. A point of pride for the winery is the collaboration with winemaker Eveline Fraser who comes to Vinultra from the prestigious Cloudy Bay winery. And if that is the hand... It is no coincidence that the wines are so interesting.
