Imbottigliato all'origine da Tenute Nicosia- Via Luigi Capuana, 65- 95039 Trecastagni (CT)
A sensory journey along the slopes of Europe’s highest active volcano. That is exactly what this wine delivers once uncorked. The pure energy of Etna translated into the finesse of fine bubbles. A true “trait d’union” capable of linking the fiery warmth of Sicily with the sharp freshness of the mountains. We are in Trecastagni, on the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna, within the Nicosia estate. Here viticulture is anything but easy; it is a practice that requires dedication and hard work. The vineyards are cultivated within a natural amphitheatre of dry-stone walls and terraces exposed to dramatic temperature swings, with warm days and distinctly cool nights. This mountain climate, combined with soils composed of volcanic sands and black lava scree rich in minerals, gives the grapes an extraordinary acidic backbone. The undisputed star here is Nerello Mascalese, used in its pure form. This indigenous red grape variety, renowned for its thin skins and naturally high acidity, proves ideal for sparkling wine production. It gives the finished wine elegance, floral nuances and the distinctive savoury imprint that recalls volcanic rock. The grapes are harvested by hand in small crates to preserve the integrity of the bunches. After gentle pressing, the base wine ferments at controlled temperatures to capture its freshest aromas. The second fermentation then takes place in bottle according to the Metodo Classico. The sparkling wine subsequently rests and matures on its lees for several months. This period of ageing in darkness is the true secret behind its aromatic complexity and the development of a fine, dense and persistent mousse. Bright antique pink in colour, crossed by a dense stream of bubbles, the nose is intense and precise. Notes of red berries such as redcurrant emerge first, followed by pomegranate and refreshing hints of citrus fruits and wild herbs. Delicate notes of bread crust and yeast appear on the finish, enriching the bouquet. On the palate the wine is taut, vertical and remarkably mineral. The freshness is vibrant and carries through to a long, harmonious and clean finish. Try it with a board of flavourful Sicilian cured meats, where the bubbles perfectly cleanse the palate. It is also excellent with pistachio-crusted seared tuna or a gourmet pizza topped with burrata and red prawns from Mazara.
Who knows whether in 1898, when Francesco Nicosia, great-grandfather of the current owner, decided to open his first wine shop in Trecastagni, he already knew that Mount Etna would one day become the very symbol of quality wine in Sicily. He probably hoped so. Even then, Etna wines were known and appreciated throughout Europe for their mineral strength and volcanic personality. From those fortunate beginnings to today’s management, the journey has been long but consistent. Today the company is led by Carmelo Nicosia, who focused on revitalising the estate through vineyard expansion and renewal, as well as the construction of a modern winery. Today Cantine Nicosia is a dynamic, modern and efficient company, able to look towards the future while fully respecting tradition, thanks to a young but highly skilled team. Indigenous grape varieties and international varieties well adapted to the Sicilian climate coexist to create wines of great personality, produced with full respect for the environment. The winery remains based in Trecastagni, while much of the estate’s vineyards lie nearby at the foot of Monte Gorna, one of Etna’s many extinct craters. The company also owns extensive land in Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa, home of Cerasuolo DOCG production, and directly manages large vineyard holdings throughout Sicily.
