Today we are in a territory that needs no introduction. Napa Valley, the temple of American wine. A strip of land that in recent decades has managed to challenge the great European giants. Rutherford Ranch stands right here, in an area historically known as the “Rutherford Bench”. The secret of this place lies in the composition of its soils, a mix of gravel and volcanic sand that ensures perfect drainage. It is said that wines born here have a distinctive note, almost earthy, described by local enthusiasts as “Rutherford Dust”. A geographical signature that gives elegance and a distinctive texture to the great red wines of the valley. Cabernet Sauvignon vinified on its own: in California this grape variety finds its “promised land”, ripening fully thanks to the generous sunshine. The result is a grape that loses any vegetal edge and transforms into a concentrate of dark fruit and spices. For the ageing of the wine, the winery follows a hybrid approach: part rests in oak barriques while another part matures in stainless steel tanks. This technique is the secret of its drinkability. The oak adds complexity and toasted notes, while the steel preserves freshness and the fragrant character of the fruit, preventing the wine from becoming too heavy. Deep and impenetrable ruby red in the glass, the nose bursts with blackcurrant, plum and sour cherry. Then come the noble notes of oak: vanilla, cedar and a hint of sweet spices. On the palate the structure is full and enveloping. The tannins are incredibly soft, a gentle caress accompanying flavours of blackberry and black cherry, closing on a very long finish reminiscent of dark chocolate and pipe tobacco.
